One of the strangest, most fascinating stores in downtown Manhattan, the Denise Carbonell Gallery at 154 Stanton (at Suffolk) appears to be headed for extinction. Its building—home to the ancient signage of haberdasher Louis Zuflacht—just hit the market with a $2.8 million asking price. (Carbonell paid $340,000 for the building back in 1984.) Our fond hope is that the buyer doesn't dare mess with the Zuflacht facade, undoubtedly one of our favorites in the city. Meantime, get your quilts, animals, and hands while they last.
