Six months' worth of rumors of the demise of beloved Lower East Side Jewish bakery Gertel's, famous for its rugelach, challa and other made-on-premise baked goods, seem to have borne out: via a note from a tipster, we learn that store, open since 1914, will be closing this Friday. "Gertel's posted a sign yesterday saying that the store is closing for good as of June 22. And, significantly, the two-lots-wide one-story tile warehouse right next door has recently vacated the premises as well. That's a big footprint to build on. Neighborhood character gives way to eight-story condo development." As we speak, Racked photographers are en route to the bakery for visual confirmation; a call to the establishment this afternoon yielded the news that the storefront is closing but that the bakery will remain as a wholesale-only operation. There are still two great bakeries obviously they aren't gertels but they make great stuff. Not to mention kossars which has the best baigels and bialis anywhere.
You guys should start making sandwiches.
Thank you for replying, Juda! Im glad there is no cause for alarm, although this is a real shonda for Gertels. As long as they still sell that chocolate rugelach somewhere, all is not lost.
I grew up (and still live) in the lower east side. I went to school at Seward Park and went to Gertels for lunch and for special holiday treats (even though I am not kosher or Jewish-the nature of the LES has always been multicultural and inclusive). The character and soul of the LES is being torn out and destroyed by condo-building ghouls. It is incomprehensible that Gertels, Katz, 2nd Avenue Deli, Ratners, Teresas, etc. must close down in order for money-grubbing YUPPIES to have a quaint luxury apartment. I lived through "tent city" in Tompkins Square and junkies and even riots, and I would say, I prefer that to the unfeeling zombies that are taking over this part of town. I am not against change but this is just mass destruction of the history and the heart of this part of town.
