We're still reeling from the shocking news that Gertel's Bakery, once an essential part of our AM routine, is shuttering this Friday. Of course, the closing of a Lower East Side landmark prompts an inevitable question: Are other beloved neighborhood institutions safe? The jury's still out on the future of Katz's, but rest assured that one legendary purveyor isn't about to leave us anytime soon. As Juda Engelmayer, current owner of Kossar's Bialys at 367 Grand Street, commented on this very site, the oldest bialy bakery in the United States isn't going anywhere. We find comfort in that.
