Breaking: Press Conference At Brooklyn Trader Joe's Site Tomorrow
Wednesday, July 11, 2007, by Leslie Price

2007_06_independance%20bank%20tjs.JPGSooooo, after being confirmed, and then "maybed," Trader Joe's Brooklyn is actually, officially happening! We hear via a very, very reliable tipster that a press conference will be held tomorrow at 10:40am at the Trader Joe's Brooklyn site on Atlantic Avenue and Court Street. The conference, led by Marty Markowitz, is to officially announce that the store is opening. In addition to the conference, there'll be a parade of sorts with music from a Brooklyn-based Caribbean steel drum band, because, as our tipster writes, "Trader Joe's is, like, tropical." The parade will start outside Marty's office at 209 Joralemon Street at 10:30 (Marty will be wearing some sort of Hawaiian garb) and will travel to the TJ's site at 130 Court Street, where Marty and a rep from Two Trees will announce the good news. We're so excited that if we owned a Hawaiian shirt, we'd put it on tomorrow. See you at the parade.

I'm guessing that Sahadi's is a middle eastern market, perhaps Lebanese? Anyway, because I don't often shop over there, the Trader Joes would attract me, (mostly for cheap wine) especially if there's parking. In which case I'm likely to visit, and probably shop at other local markets, especially for pistachio nuts and olive oil.

Trader Joes is the BEST. Great products for less than any local shop (ie: sahadi)or supermarket chain (da lovely key food) offers. always pleasant workers, clean, affordable, lots of samples and more. I for one will now shop there all the time. worth the trip. (still a little partial to fairway though!!!!)

I shop around there and think the TJs will help Sahadis and the fruit stand. TJs is great for some things but the fruit isn't the best (and the fruit at the fruit stand on Atlantic b/t Court and Clinton is fantastic) nor do they have Sahadi's breadth of bulk and middle eastern food. The best part is those in Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill, and Carroll Gardens (now I understand why someone made up Bococa) can walk and get everything we need.

FYI, this Trader Joe's will not have cheap wine. NYS laws only allow for one liquor store, so the one in Union Square will be the only TJ wine shop in all of New York state.

As a loyal supporter of Sahadi's, I don't think it will affect them one bit. In fact, I think the increased "foodie" traffic will actually help Sahadi's and the other "Oriental" places along Atlantic Avenue. (It's funny how that block between Court and Clinton has become Little Sanaa.)

I think Trader Joes is smart enough to establish some kind of corporate entity to allow it to sell wine in more than one location in NYS.

In general, I think this will be good for food stores in the area, as it will generate more shoppers than before. I dont think Sahadi's or any particular stores will suffer.

Someone has brought this up on every thread about this new trader joes, but anyway--Sahadi's business is mostly wholesale, plus 90% of the crap they sell you cant really get anywhere else, including trader joe's, so i suspect they'll be otay.

Great. Just what we need. A big suburban grocery store to go with our fourteen big suburban drug stores and FORTY banks. Maybe a big suburban parking lot will be next?

I've gotta move.

Sahadi's will be fine. But maybe, just maybe the shitty Keyfood on Atlantic will go out of business! It would make me so happy.

I agree with #9. I like the small stores around here. Pacific Green, Sahadis, the Bengladeshi guy trying to make a living selling fruit on the corner and even the (in)adequate Key Food. The latter is OK because of all the other options around here, and I don't mind going to a couple of different stores in a one block or two area for all I need. You meet your friends, including the shop owners, in the different stores, talk politics, get therapy on the suupermarket line. It's a neighborhood. Would that we could keep it that way.
