Starbucks Turns Its Gaze To LIC, Two Stores To Open In Near Future

Everyone's favorite caffeinator is coming to Long Island City. Courtesy of blogging broker Eric Benaim of Nest Seekers and his Rockrose Development tipster, we learn that Starbucks is planning two stores for the neighborhood. The first outpost of the coffee chain will be located somewhere within Rockrose's new development EastCoast, another location is slated for a yet-to-be-named nook of the hood (Starbucks apparently hasn't signed the lease for that one yet). Though neither 'bucks has opened yet, we already know that their impact on Long Island City will be massive. People haven't been drinking nearly enough coffee there, and it's high time someone changed that. UPDATE: From the VP of Rockrose Development, "We're talking to Starbucks and we'd love to get a Starbucks at EastCoast, but nothing is definite and nothing has been signed."

there's a starbucks on queens blvd & 46th st. i believe there's another in astoria. it's really not that big of a deal that yet another one is joining the ranks of western queens.

I agree completely. There are currently two wonderful local enterprises in the neighborhood: Communitea (Vernon & 47th - which would be a mere two blocks from the Starbucks location) & Brasil Coffee House (Vernon & 49th). There was also Ten 63 (10-63 Jackson Avenue), but that was closed down to make way for yet another uninspired ubiqutous luxury condo. That rubbed a lot of LIC residents the wrong way when it closed.
Can someone please explain to me this need to kill off the neighborhood's character and turn it into the Bizarro Murray Hill? L.I.C. has so much potential. Why are people opting for the most boring choice?
As much as i love places like Communitea & Cafe Henri, I think its almost impossible to keep out certain BIG companies, Williamsburg has Tasti Delight and American Apparel, as long as LIC doesnt get a Gap or McDonalds im cool with that...
