Above The Fray: Chaos at Calypso
Wednesday, April 2, 2008, by Rebecca

The Calypso sample sale going down in the Garment District is really something special. Today, the place was crowded with crazed shoppers, screaming children, and long lines at both the entrance and the checkout. It's worth braving the madness, though. Boatloads of inventory—ranging from silk dresses and kid's cashmere sweaters to bedsheets and cowboy boots—are marked down big time, which explains why loyal followers of the boho brand are flocking in droves. Cotton dresses and skirts, silk dresses and tops, and cashmere sweaters are priced between $10-60 (see photo gallery above for full price lists). Cute metallic bags with chain straps and bright-colored leather clutches cost $50, while classic flats and cowboy boots sell for $40.

The clothing assortment is vast and varied: a range of sizes are represented, and the styles and colors are plentiful. All in all, it's an ideal place to go to accumulate office separates on the cheap. But buyer beware: there is no trying on, not even over your clothing. (We tried to put a dress on over our outfit and were chastised.) It's helpful to know your Calypso size ahead of time and then just gather goods; for those unfamiliar with the brand's fit, clothing tends to run a little on the larger size.

In addition to the clothing and accessories, there is a substantial home goods selection, including bath towels, pillow cases, blankets, and quilts—all less than $100. It's really an epic event, and interested parties would be well advised to drop by pronto!
