At 8:08 this morning, department store Shanghai Tang sent a squadron of eight women in red dresses out onto the corner of 57th St and Madison Ave to distribute 888 envelopes to 888 passerby in celebration of today's date, 8.08.08. One of the envelopes entitled whoever opened it to $888 worth of Shanghai Tang goods. Eight is a lucky number in Chinese tradition, which is also why the Olympics began today, so by the transitive property the whole thing was an Olympics tie-in—sort of.
