Vintage-inspired designer James Coviello opened his first retail store yesterday at 70 Orchard Street between Broome and Grand. The new boutique, a darling nook of antique and antique-feeling items, sells not only some of James' fall 2009 collection but some of his favorite things as well—sweet, feminine items like jewelry, vintage hats, custom-made accessories, and glass domes with birds inside (recreated from antique materials by Coviello). Clothes run from around $200 to a $525 (for a green tweed jacket with a pink fur collar). Dresses and ruffled tops fill the racks in colors such as teal, tan, dark pink, and the full spectrum of pea greens. A favorite of ours was a chartreuse-printed shift dress, which came in either pea green or teal, for $320.

The store began as "a shell," Coviello told us, but within four months it has transformed into a fantasy garden filled with antiques and fine fabrics—think Anthropologie if it were one designer's project instead of a national chain. If the merchandise and atmosphere isn't convincing enough, James' studio is attached in the back, and they are currently building a garden behind it.—Lauren Frankfort
