Pop-Up Shops: Art Books and City Guides at Phaidon
Wednesday, November 4, 2009, by Frank Gargione

Another day, another pop-up. This time Phaidon, art and artsy book publisher, has opened a temporary shop in an almost too big space at 100 Wooster St. in Soho. Selling since Monday, the space is vast and white—a peaceful respite with a jazz soundtrack and a helpful staff. Stock consists of, well, a bunch of Phaidon titles. Cooking classic The Silver Spoon ($45) and its new companion The Silver Spoon Pasta ($39.95) are joined by the imprint's well-known selection of clearinghouse titles including The Art Book, The Photography Book, and The Fashion Book ($24.95 each).

Single-artist titles are also available. We spotted a couple of Warhol options, and overviews on Ingres and Cai Guo-Qiang, plus Charles Saatchi's hilariously titled sort of biography My Name Is Charles Saatchi And I Am An Artoholic ($9.95). The slightly less high-minded, once-buzzy but still delightfully ridiculous Japanese street style tomes Fruits, Fresh Fruits, and Gothic & Lolita ($29.95 each) are featured prominently. For kids and kids at heart there is the much-loved Nicholas series, while travelers can browse the complete Wallpaper City Guide series. On the lower end, pick up museum-style artsy greeting cards, or go all out and pick up signed, limited-run artwork by a slew of marquee names, including Nan Golden.

An ideal place to pick up season's greetings for the person who has everything, or the person you just don't know that well, Phaidon is here for the holidays and through January.
