Images of Nathan Stobezki from his Facebook Met gala afterparty albumIn the past week, a mystery Twitterer calling himself @FashionWeekNYC has been prolifically tweeting his plans for the upcoming Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and posing as an industry insider. He's amassed over 24,700 followers and has been retweeted by major fashion labels. No one seems to know who the mystery man is. Yesterday, Fashionista reported: "A Lincoln Center rep told me that they are not affiliated with her. IMG said the same thing."
But Racked knows who it is.
@FashionWeekNYC is the Twitter handle of one Nathan Stobezki, a 2009 graduate of Camden County College who runs a site called myownrunway.com, a self-described "High-End fashion website which provides you with complete fashion shows from Paris, Milan, London, Miami and New York." According to Stobezki's Facebook page, he also works as a consultant at Jennifer Black & Associates, a retail research company based in Oregon. And, according to his LinkedIn profile, he's a "Fashion Tweetologist at Tweetologist"—just like his self-description in Twitter, which reads: "I am an Independent Fashion Tweetologist."
Our source that led us to pinpoint Stobezki as @FashionWeekNYC claims that the now-notorious Twitterer lacks professional and industry credentials, but may have friends in high places: "He's a friend of a CEO of a major retailer who doesn't go to any shows and, thus, gives Nathan his invitations," our tipster says. "He's just one of those wannabe guys who talks to actual industry VIPs like they've been working together for years when, in fact, they haven't."
From a simple Google image search, it seems that the exec Stobezki is connected to may work for Bloomingdale's—images of him captioned "Nathan Stobezki of Bloomingdale's" are among the first results to turn up.
We emailed both Bloomingdale's and Stobezki for a request for comment but did not receive a reply in time for publication.
