Spotted all over Fashion Week fall/winter 2011: Bold coral lips. On the models, the editors, the glamorati and basically anyone with enough cojones to rock the look (not to mention a very steady hand or a professional make-up artist on call for proper application). But what about us civilians who want to give the spunky shade a spin down the cubicle or grocery store aisle, as opposed to the catwalk or red carpet?
Luckily we caught a moment with famed makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury backstage at Jill Stuart while she was working her magic with Jill Stuart #3 eye shadow and #5 coral lipstick on the lovely models. Charlotte counts Kate Moss, Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez as clients, so we figured she knows her stuff.
"Do you know who does the best?", Charlotte confided. "I swear, the best wearable coral I’ve ever seen is Tom Ford. Tom Ford True Coral lipstick — it’s amazing. Because coral is not an easy shade to a) get right when you try and buy it or b) to wear. And I have to say his is the most flattering one."
Awesome, so after we drop $45 on Tom's Private Blend Lip Color, how do we wear it without looking like geriatric retiree chilling in Sarasota or a lady of the night?
"Brown eyeshadow looks fabulous with coral," advises Charlotte. "Also, gray looks good with coral. I like the way it's done today. Like a stain on the lip and kind of a smokey eye. I think it's very glam, very chic and you can still wear it during the day."
Done! We'll see you at Whole Foods.
