Comedy writer Bonnie Datt once bought a chainmail vest "for clubbing"—a purchase she later came to lament, once she realized that chainmail isn't particularly slimming. Inspired by this, she now spends her spare time asking famous people to dish about purchases which they initially loved—but ended up regretting, for Buyer's Remorse.
The charity Fashion Delivers just honored Paper Magazine's legendary Editorial Director Mickey Boardman for his philanthropic work at their recent Pay it Fashion Forward event. So we thought this was a good time to find out from the downtown denizen and front row fashion week fixture what he's had buyer's remorse about. Mickey's response didn't completely follow our format, since he told us about something he regretted not buying rather than buying, but we're big fans of the hilarious Boardman, so we're going to bend the rules a wee bit this week.
Racked: Mickey, can you tell us something that you've had Buyer's Remorse about?
Mickey Boardman: The only thing that is very straight man about me is that I never regret buying anything, and I never return anything—even if I don't like it. Clothes to me are like cute boys. You never look back in your old age and say, "God I wish I had slept with less cute boys." You never look back and think, "God I wish I had less Stella McCartney handbags."
What I have buyer's remorse about is stuff I did not buy. Anytime that I travel—like I was in Mexico for New Years, and I found these amazing ceramics in San Miguel de Allende. I bought a lot of them and I got home and I could kick myself for not buying a new suitcase and filling it with them.
If anything, I regret buying stuff that doesn't fit. Where you say, "Oh I'm going to lose ten pounds—or eighty." It really has to fit or be easily made to fit.
