As fashion start-ups are wont to do, Moda Operandi is evolving. Thanks to the $36 million they raised from investors, the high-end trunk show site will expand its "pre-tail" business model, in which shoppers can order designer pieces from the runway to be delivered six weeks to five months later depending on the designer's production timeline, to the more traditional online e-commerce sales style. The site plans to carry high-end brands like Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler per usual, but include in-season goods available at the time of the order.
The site isn't gearing up to become just another Net-a-Porter, however. Moda Operandi co-founder and former Gilt Groupe executive Áslaug Magnúsdóttir told The Business of Fashion that having an established pre-tail business gives them a leg-up when curating the in-season offerings. Those who are willing to drop a ton of cash for a piece of clothing they won't see for another six months are generally confident and/or have insight into where trends are headed.
The company is also expanding abroad, so watch out Asia: you're about to get your your pre-tail/e-commerce world rocked.
