What Not to Wear star Stacy London has a new book out, The Truth About Style. But in an interview with the Washington Post, Stacy says that there's much more to clothing than just liking aesthetics. She admits that she became interested in clothes when she was coping with some major body image issues, and she sees how many other women use their clothes to mask their feelings. Here are a couple of the most interesting tidbits from the very revealing interview.
1. She thinks we should all throw out the no-white-shoes-after-Labor-Day rule.
"Global warming demands it."
2. She has insecurities too.
London writes that she became obsessed with fashion in part because changing the outside was easier than changing the inside. She coped with an eating disorder and stress-related stomach issues. "I wish I had been in therapy while I was writing the book," she admitted.
3. She went to Vassar.
And the title of her thesis was "Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, and Hermann Broch, the Concept of Self and Its Relationships to the Creation of Character in Literature." Is that good or bad prep for writing a style book?
4. She said no to writing a memoir.
Although her book tour is full of confessionals, London turned down her publisher's request for a memoir, saying that she was too young.
5. Strangers ask her to criticize their clothes.
London says one of the side effects of her job is the people who see her in the street and start asking her style questions. "The first thing they'll say is: 'Rip me apart. Just rip me apart!' As if that's some fun sort of activity. Some people are gluttons for punishment."
