Deborah Needleman, formerly the editor-in-chief of the Wall Street Journal's WSJ., has settled into the top position at New York Times' T Magazine this week. Since Sally Singer left T, there have been countless rumors about who will fill the spot (WWD even reported that Needleman denied accepting the job), so it follows that rumors will abound as T goes through these ch-ch-changes. Here are the top five circling the magazine and it's new editor-in-chief:
Rumor #1: She began negotiations long before Sally Singer left.
Rumor #2: She breaking the Times' budget. Her managing editor Robert Thomson at the Wall Street Journal offered to match any salary promised at the Times. Plus, the Times "had to dip into its discretionary budget to get her."
Rumor #3: She's breaking away from New York Times publishers. Needleman supposedly asked for a separate publisher for the magazine in order to lessen pressure to wrangle advertisers.
Rumor #4: She's making it monthly. Needleman volleyed to change T to a monthly mag and turn each issue's focus to general-interest rather than keeping up Singer's themed issue style.
Rumor #5: She's bringing a team. Fashion features director Whitney Vargas and creative director Patrick Li. He resigned Friday; another staffer, market editor Andrew Lutjens, also resigned recently, but for reasons unrelated to Needleman's departure.
