In a new series, we're brushing up on our fashion diction with a little help from our friends. Today, we get a lesson in Zero + Maria Cornejo.
Zero + Maria Cornejo opened in 1998 as a retail concept but morphed into a brand when the Chilean-born designer, Maria Cornejo, combined her workshop with the store space. Her clothes are generally minimal yet feminine, fluid yet structured, an effect achieved since garments are often draped and cut from one piece of fabric. If that sounds confusing, see how people grapple with the plus sign while pronouncing the brand after the jump. But never fear: CFDA CEO Steven Kolb is here to help us out with the number-name combo, which, fun fact, is "an expression of a pure vision: a number that neither adds nor subtracts. It is, rather, a point of departure."
