Creative Ambassador-at-Large of Barney's and one-man quip-generator, Simon Doonan, will publish his fifth book The Asylum: A Collage of Couture Reminiscences?and Hysteria September 5. Quote excerpts in WWD indicate Doonan's tome speaks to various and sundry topics within the fashion industry, including the following tidbit:
Was there a pansy alive who had not read for [the part of Nigel in The Devil Wears Prada]? The whole audition charade was nothing more than a carefully orchestrated piece of unpaid research. We gays had been dragged in to swish it up—on camera no less—for the delectation of some precast, overpaid straight actor. This thespian would then create his characterization based on our uncompensated-for mincings.More about "fat fascists" in fashion, lesbians vs. gay men, and kids these days on WWD.These dark suspicions were confirmed when the movie began lensing, just days after, with Stanley Tucci playing the part of Nigel.
