One of the many highlights of Chanel's Spring 2014 Paris runway show a few months ago were the colorful, crazy bags. Of particular note were the spray-painted backpacks adorned with knotted strings and what appears to be a Chanel paperclip. The accessory was highlighted on the last page of this month's Vogue, where editor Virginia Smith expounds upon its glories.
Karl Lagerfeld must have created the bricolage bag, she says, with an art student in mind. "Picture a young art student spray-painting the blank canvas of a classic backpack and then personalizing it with loops of haphazardly woven ropes and heavy chains," they say. All of the bag's bits and bobs "[add] up to a spirited assemblage of what only appear to be happy accidents." The cost of that casual, bored-art-student-with-a-box-of-colored-pens look? $3,400. This is just ripe for a DIY, right?
