Target followed up its recent press preview for the Peter Pilotto collab by sending out the full lookbook. While something is to be said for knowing how these pieces will look when photographed with a phone, it's nice to see the collection styled-up and cleanly shot. Take a look below for all the looks, plus pricing and a short chat with the designers Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos.
Racked: What were some of the parameters you had to work within to fit Target's goals for the collection? Peter: We knew the amount of pieces we had to work on more or less, but for the rest, we were really free to choose everything. We were really fascinated by the idea of doing swimwear so that was the starting point in a way.
Chris: I think what we were really into was that we would be able to do a category that we'd never really done properly. So doing swimwear was really new, really exciting for us.
Racked: Yeah, why swimwear, why now?
Peter: I think swimwear is something that really fits our aesthetic. Obviously the prints are associated with it.
Racked: Did designing for Target differ at all from your usual design process?
Peter: Yes, I mean, for our own collection, the prints are engineered for every garment. So every garment is its own different print. And that's what also makes the production very expensive because you almost have to cut every garment one by one in production. And of course here there were very different sort of rules of how to produce, and so we had to work on prints that fit into that different way of producing.
We worked a lot with different layers in the prints, so there are a couple of nature print families but worked out in different ways. For instance, the print on that dress there, it's a different version the skirt and the top. Target was open-minded to us doing hundreds of prints, so it was great.
You mentioned swimwear, but is there anything else that Target helped you do that you haven't been able to do yet? Like, I noticed the sunglasses and the tote bags Yeah, it was exciting just being able to choose what categories we wanted to do and them saying, "Yes, sure, no problem."
