Gilt shot to success with its flash sale offerings, but with that trend waning, it has quietly been exploring other ways to make money. According to a report by Re/code, the company has recently expanded into the decidedly unfashiony field of product fulfillment and distribution for other brands.
Gilt is leveraging its extensive knowledge and experience in moving product quickly, as well as its cozy relationship with UPS, to provide support for other businesses such as The Clymb, a site that sells outdoorsy gear. Gilt's been working for The Clymb for more than five months, it revealed recently, and is now pitching its services to e-commerce sites. Gilt's supply chain chief told Re/code that, "We're going to be very, very specific and strategically try to decide what type of business make sense as opposed to working with just anyone. We consider distribution a core competency at Gilt and it also is one way of … being more indispensable to brands."
