Urban Outfitters Inc. has landed in court after one shopper accused the retailer of collecting customers' personal information in order to send them unsolicited Free People junk mail.
According to accusations, "Urban Outfitters Inc. subsidiary Free People LLC violated fair business laws by collecting customers' ZIP codes during credit card transactions and using the information to send them junk mail." The suit could apply to the thousands of people who shopped at Free People in the state of Massachusetts (where the trial is taking place) and could cost the company millions. "Plaintiff and class members suffered damages, including the invasion of their privacy and the profit or other economic benefit that Free People obtained from the misappropriation of [their] personal identification information," said a lawyer.
