The inherently obnoxious graphic tee has taken a dark turn. Messages on wordy crop tops, tank tops, and baseball shirts populating mall stores like Wet Seal and Forever21 range from self-loathing ("uncool," "walk up to the club like what up I have social anxiety and I want to go home") to world-loathing ("don't bother me," "I believe in hate at first sight"). What may have started as a Tumblr-tinged, ironic Hot Topic throwback has ballooned to some seriously low-morale jersey shirting options for tweens (and the tween-at-heart).
