Uniqlo is up to 26 stores in America, but has yet to earn a profit in the US. According to Reuters, Uniqlo's high opening costs are part of the reason that the US business is in the red. But chief executive officer of Uniqlo USA Larry Meyer is optimistic. He told Reuters that Uniqlo is invested in building its US presence, and that Uniqlo's US operation is "on the way to getting (profitable) within the next couple of years."
By mid-November, Meyer says Uniqlo will have 39 locations in America. The ultimate goal for Uniqlo is 200 stores in the US by 2020. To get there, that means opening 10 to 15 locations a year. Meyer says the brand is also still looking into sizing technology, which is a nice way of saying that sizes in the US are getting scaled up, so what may be a small in a US store is actually a medium in Japan.
