Hearst just named Cosmopolitan EIC Joanna Coles the new editorial director of Seventeen (a variation on the same role that Anna Wintour holds at Condé Nast) and announced that Ann Shoket will be stepping down as the mag's EIC. Adweek is reporting that Shoket will stay on as a consultant to an unnamed project at Hearst but Coles will now be directing the show at Seventeen.
David Carey, the president of Hearst Magazines, told WWD that Coles was a "no-brainer" for the position, since Cosmopolitan and Seventeen readers overlap (as well as 50% of the advertisers for both magazines). Coles already has big plans for Seventeen under her watch: "I want Seventeen to be the playbook to go to college," Coles told WWD. "I think it gets you up to going to college and at the end of your first year of college, you start subscribing to Cosmo." Shoket's replacement will reportedly be announced within the next four weeks.
