Bad Ideas: Starbucks' Free Iced Coffee Cards

2008_7_starbuckscard.jpg

It's everywhere! Your best friend may have it, your coworkers might have gotten it weeks ago, and you might be sitting there with it right now. Yes, it's the Starbucks Free-Iced-Coffee-On-Wednesdays card, which came in an insert of the New York Post in early June. We've been sitting pretty on ours for a while now, but redeeming it at the city's various Starbucks locations is getting uglier. Why the trouble? It seems that counterfeiting of the card is running rampant.

Sure, the deal is pretty sweet: each time you present the flimsy card on Wednesdays until July 23rd you get a free tall iced coffee. The card does not need to be handed over, thus ensuring that the city is well-caffeinated every hump day. As the weeks wear on, however, baristas have been getting noticeably grabbier with the cards and one divulged that it was due to paper fakes.

Where to take your fake. >>

Greenmarket Report: Fidi's Fulton Stalls, Rendered

2008_7_fultonstallsmarket.jpg
[Rendering of the Fulton Stalls Market via SHoP Architects; click to expand]

If you've been following the saga of New Amsterdam Market, the organization that wants to preserve one of the historic Fulton Fish Market buildings in the Financial District as a public market, you know that developer General Growth properties is also vying for the public's fresh food love with a market of their own. Dubbed the Fulton Stall Market, it is in no way affiliated with New Amsterdam and is located at 11 Fulton Street in the building that currently houses the Bodies exhibit. Above, a rendering of what could be from SHoP Architects, the group GGP has hired to help redevelop South Street Seaport. Though all we have to go on right now is this rendering, the Fulton Stall Market is actually up and running seven days a week. And what a bucolic, fresh-flower-filled paradise we imagine it to be.

Market Report: New Amsterdam Draws a Crowd

On Sunday afternoon, vendors, chefs and other food industry types joined forces for another edition of the New Amsterdam Market. It was the third outdoor event of its kind, held down in Fidi outside one of the old Fulton Fish Market buildings on the seaport. Eater dropped by to take some photos and sample the fresh goods from producers and purveyors like Saxelby Cheesemongers, Bridge Urban Winery, The Bent Spoon and Balthazar. From their report, we hear the place was packed, and aside from some early-afternoon showers, was a success. For updates on when the next gathering will be held, or to throw your weight behind the market as it continues to fight for its survival, click through to their website.

Market Report: Double the Fresh Food for Fidi

2008_6_newamsterdammarket.gif
Location of the New Amsterdam Market

Fidi, once a neighborhood that would give an arm or a leg for a good greenmarket, now has two. Of course, this being New York, one is seeking to crush the other. Playing the role of Goliath in this drama is General Growth Properties. The big-time development company has put together an ambitious proposal for redeveloping part of the South Street Seaport waterfront which includes a greenmarket named the Fulton Stalls Market located in a building on Fulton Street (the one currently housing the Bodies exhibit). As David, you have non-profit organization New Amsterdam Market, a group of farmers and gastronomes who want to bring locally-sourced foodstuffs to the neighborhood and hope to use one of the old Fulton Fish Market buildings on the water for that purpose. In GGP's proposal, that building would be razed to make room for a colossal tower. Of course, GGP's plan for the area is still in the proposal stages, and will need government approval to move forward. In the meantime, both markets will be up and running this weekend. Let it be known, though, that only one has the support of both Alice Waters and Mario Batali.

Seaport Becoming Less Fishy, More Foodie-Friendly

2008_6_newseaport.jpgThe open-air greenmarket long rumored for the Fulton Market building in Fidi is one step closer to becoming a reality. According to Downtown Express, developer General Growth Properties has stated that "a permanent 16-stall, fresh food market will open this summer on South St." The report: "Vendors for the market will sell locally grown produce and prepared food from the same stalls where fishmongers once hawked their wares, on South St. between Beekman and Fulton Sts., in the base of the building that now contains the Bodies exhibit. The market, which General Growth is building now, will be open seven days a week, year-round, starting sometime in August."

Though the market could just be a way to curry favor with locals who might not be so keen on the massive 495-foot hotel/condo/retail tower GGP plans to build down there, we'd prefer to think they're just gastronomes who appreciate their arugula locally-sourced. Unfortunately, this entire plan would include the teardown of the historic New Market Building that currently houses greenmarket New Amsterdam, something they're none too pleased about.
