When Nike released the Hyperdunk 2015 this weekend, they made two Canadian brothers very happy. Charles and Michael Maloof have spent over a year begging Nike to create Michael J. Fox's sneakers from Back to the Future II via their McFLY 2015 petition, which has garnered 41,000 signatures so far. The Hyperdunk almost answers their prayers, though it gets a crucial detail wrong:
The Hyperdunk 2015s sport a similar color scheme [to McFly's shoes], along with an orange 2015 (the year in which the BttF2 future scenes are set) on the right tongue and orange arrows on the left tongue. The arrows harken back to the BttF logo. In case the reference weren't obvious enough, the inside of the tongue and the soles are emblazoned with Doc Brown's expletive-of-choice: "Great Scott!" Sadly, the shoelaces are of the regular 20th century variety.
Four new American Apparel stores are in the process of opening (actually, one just did) in our fair city, bringing the local tally to 19. Racked photo man Will Femia has captured the freshest of the bunch for you to gaze upon in a lovely gallery; for an overview of the madness, we've created a map of all the locations. Thankfully, you'll never be far from a new t-shirt now.
HELL'S KITCHEN & BEYOND—With their Ninth Avenue store now a month old, American Apparel is looking to expand further north and west. Via the company's website, we've discovered that Dov and his merry batch of headband-wearing associates are planning to open stores in Harlem (250 W 125th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves) and on the UWS (2103 Broadway at 73rd St). And of course there's also the pending F.I.T. location at 347 Seventh Ave. Give in, they've won. [RackedWire]
TRIBECA—It's almost time for Tribeca Whole Foods'opening-day extravaganza. A tipster writes, "At yesterdays green fair in Battery Park Whole Foods were handing out leaflets announcing that they would be opening on Wednesday, July 9th at 8am. Opening hours will be 8am to 10pm, 7 days per week." Whee. [RackedWire Inbox]
NOHO—More on the Crunch Soho/Noho(?) closing tragedy, from a tipster: "Crunch on 623 Broadway in Soho is definitely closing. Just got a notice from Crunch yesterday saying they 'were not able to come to mutually agreeable terms in extending [their] lease with the building and will be turning off the last treadmill at 11 pm on June 30, 2008.' Not all is lost for us Soho Crunchites. They are offering a reduced monthly rate of $10 off current agreement AND complimentary upgrade to all All Crunch membership (access to all Crunch locations)." [RackedWire]
HARLEM—An addendum to that post about Baby Phat closing their Soho flagship. A commenter writes, "They are opening a new store on 125th street later this year." That will be one interesting opening party. Invite, please. [Racked Comments]
Here's a nice, juicy rumor for you: Macy's may be interested in setting up shop at Harlem Park, the colossal new office building planned for 125th Street and Park Avenue. According to The Real Deal: "The Macy's store could rise up to the third floor of the 21-story building, however the amount of available space hinges on how big a lease Major League Baseball takes for the new television network it is launching." Major League Baseball and Macy's? The little development that could is really taking off.
