iPhrenzy: Cube and MePa Going Strong, Soho Out

The rain made waiting in line this morning for the new iPhone particularly unpleasant, though both Soho and MePa let shoppers wait inside their stores. The big news this morning: Soho will start opening for iPhone buyers at 8am.

Apple Midtown
Line length: 2-3 hours
Availability: Everything is in stock
Color: Waiters were discussing people who try to buy spots on line. They concluded that if you wait long enough, your spot begins to feel more valuable than the iPhone itself.

Apple Soho
Line length: None, because they're sold out.
Availability: There might be more tomorrow, but they couldn't promise anything.
Color: The store opened at 8am so that iPhone purchasers didn't have to wait outside in the rain. Ninety minutes later they were sold out, but the plan worked so well that they're going to open at 8 from now on. Buyers of regular Apple products still need to wait until 9, though.

Apple MePa
Line length: 4 to 5 hours
Availability: Only 8 gigs left in stock
Color: The line looks short to the untrained eye, but that's only because the majority of it is coiled around inside the store.

Above The Fray: James Jeans' Decent Denim Sale

2008_7_jamesjeans.jpg

Right this minute, there are stacks and stacks of marked-down James Jeans sitting in a nice loft space in Hudson Square. The denim brand (of which we are fans) is having a sample sale through tomorrow evening at 500 Greenwich Street, and it is worth stopping by if you a) need a new pair and like their fit and/or b) wear a size 25.

There's a good selection of styles in for sizes 24 to 33 (and a few stacks for men), but the best deals fall to skinny folk. Sample pairs (size 25) are priced at $40 a pop, while those with larger waists must shell out $80 for their premium denim. The fitting room is communal, but also vast and equipped with a few mirrors and benches to make trying on easy. And helpful salesgirls were quick to find us sizes and styles while we were in there, trying stuff on. For those not in the market for jeans (why are you here again?) there is also a rack of $40 dresses and vests.

iPhrenzy: Fifth Ave Stands Alone

2008_7_fifthavefrontofline.jpg
The front of the line in Midtown at 9AM this morning

For those still on the hunt for an iPhone 3G, there's good news and there's bad news. The good: the Fifth Avenue Apple store got a new shipment of the gadgets in yesterday. The bad: Meatpacking and Soho are still out of phones, putting all the pressure on the Cube.

Apple Midtown
Line length: "Hours and hours." Like three hours, or like five? "Closer to five than three."
Availability: After yesterday's shipment, still strong.
Color: The line seems to be longer than ever, stretching down 58th street almost to Madison Avenue. If the shortage was a marketing ploy by Apple, it worked.
