Now Open: Bittar Finally Bows on Bleecker

The photo of a sad-looking model has been removed, the window displays are up and lighting is a go at Alexis Bittar's Bleecker Street storefront. And according to a salesperson at the designer's Soho store, Bittar Bleecker will be open today at noon. Get over there and pick up something pretty for yourself.

Rumormongering: Kate Spade to Take Over Eve and Biography on Bleecker?

A reader follows up on those rumors about Kate Spade coming to the West Village with news that the store might be larger than anyone expected. The note:
Beauty Salon Eve on Bleecker Street is closing in October and will be taken over by Kate Spade. Eve will re-locate to 6th Avenue and 8th Street. The employees at Eve are happy because apparently it is a nice space—a bit bigger than their current location—and closer to trains. Sadder still (to me anyway), Biography Bookstore is closing in the next 12 -18 months. I have heard two rumors: (1) that it will be part of Kate Spade and (2) that it will be a Sephora (vomit). Biography bookstore is looking for a new space in NYC also.
Racked's placing a bet on the former, because how much makeup could they fit in that little space?

This Store Blows: Reiss Soho, West Village
Come summer, you see retailers around the city leaving the doors of their stores propped wide open in the hopes of enticing shoppers in with blasts of frigid air conditioning. In protest of this decidedly carbon-non-neutral trend we bring you, This Store Blows, highlighting the city's worst offenders. Want to join forces with us? Contributions, accompanied by a photo, are always accepted.

Reiss Bleecker Street
Store: Reiss, 387 West Broadway and 309-313 Bleecker Street Date: 7/05/08. Time: 3pm at the West Village store, 6pm at the Soho location. Why These Stores Blow: A tipster writes, "I was all over the city this weekend and couldn't help but notice the massive waste of A/C at both Reiss stores. The West Village boutique (309-313 Bleecker) and Soho (387 West Broadway) both have their colossal doors completely open...but then I don't know how customers open those doors in winter. It seems as if they are built to alway be open."

Lease Woes: WVillage Shop Fassbinder In Trouble

West Village: A tipster sends word that small jewelry store Fassbinder is in danger of closing. The report: "Fassbinder, the nifty handcrafted jewelry boutique at 39 8th Ave. (by Jane Street) is closing...or has closed. The new landlord required a whopping 6-month deposit on the lease renewal. Fassbinder has already vacated its shop, and is camping out in a friend's space, a tiny gallery, a few doors down. Going out of biz signs all over the windows..." We're unable to confirm a closure at this time, as calls to the store are going unanswered.

Eighth Ave Guessing Game: Steven Alan to Return, Fate of Bakery Up in the Air

Wondering what was up with all the plywood at Eighth Avenue and West 13th Street, a tipster yesterday put forth that a string of stores is undergoing "what initially looked like renovations but now it looks like maybe something new is going in there." Among the affected locations are Steven Alan, Sergio Davila, Shoegasm and bakery Coffee Sweet Heart.
Racked reconnaissance turned up that both Steven Alan and Sergio Davila will return, and they have posted signs announcing brief renovations before reopening in August. Shoegasm still has their 8th Avenue address on their website despite looking very closed, but the fate of the bakery is completely up in the air.
