The Best and Worst Store Openings of Last Year?

2008_8_smallrogan.jpgThe L Magazine's "Best of New York" issue contains a list of the best and worst things to happen to New York's retail world since August '07. Best: Rogan, Thistle & Clover, Madewell, Aloha Rag, the Acne Studio, and THECAST. Worst: Blue & Cream, John Varvatos, and the Coach Legacy store. Predictable, maybe, but we can't really disagree.

We can, however, and do disagree with the following description of the iPhone 3G launch as New York's best unintentional public art exhibit: "Last year, in an impromptu citywide performance, lines formed outside Apple stores across New York as eager consumers lined up to purchase the iPhone. Many anticipated a reenactment of the piece this year, and while the lines weren't always as long — a typical wait ranged from 2-5 hours — they did last for seven days. This reference to the Bible was an obvious strategy by the artist to reflect the paradox of the awe inspired by the existence of such lines and the irritation on the part of waiting consumers." Seven days? Tell that to the people who waited outside the SoHo store for an hour this morning.

Following fellow SHNOT colonizers Aloha Rag and Rick Owens, edgy Soho menswear boutique Atelier New York will be moving their stock of Drk Shdw, Ann Demeulemeester and Number (N)ine garments from their current home at 125 Crosby Street to a 3,453-square-foot space at 304 Hudson Street between Spring and Vandam in Hudson Square. Official word of the move was released last night, but those who are in-the-know learned of the relocation months ago—after all, the Atelier crew will be running the foggy new Owens shop.

RackedWire: Rogan Readies on Bowery, Aloha Rag Celebrates

2008_5_roganstore.jpgBOWERY—The Rogan store going in to the old Bouwerie Lane Theater at 330 Bowery is thisclose to opening. Reports a reader: "Rogan sign up at new store. Very subtle, it is the original Bowery Lane Theater sign, but the 'R's on the sign are now the signature Rogan shape 'R'." [RackedWire Inbox]

Week In Review: Apple Plans FiDi Store, Gap Design Editions Launch and More

1) Financial District: We heard a rumor that Apple was interested in opening a FiDi outpost. And then, that news was confirmed. Brace, downtowners, brace.

2) Gramercy: Gap rolled out their second group of Gap Design Editions. The white shirts didn't exactly fly off shelves, but sales were brisk enough.

3) Red Hook: Ikea finally set a date for it's Red Hook outpost. June 18th's the magic day.

Now Open: Aloha Rag Breezes Into Hudson Square

Here we have Aloha Rag, the latest addition to Hudson Square's (non-existent?) retail scene. The boutique, which opened on Saturday at 505 Greenwich Street, is the company's first New York City location; they also have a store in Hawaii, which explains the name. As you can see, the interior of the place is a stark, white rectangular showcase for racks of amazing clothing and a small assortment of well-edited accessories. AR is stocked with high-end brands you don't find in too many other boutiques, so if you're on the prowl for Juicy Couture or Seven for All Mankind, head elsewhere. Among the women's selections, we spotted a fantastic pair of aggressively studded Thomas Wylde boots, a few light Commuun cotton cardigans and super-preppy tanks and skirts from Kitsuné; for men, there's an ample selection of charming 3.1 Phillip Lim sweaters and pants and fun Common Projects high tops. Prices are kind of stratospheric, but that shouldn't be a surprise given the labels stocked here. For more on the store, head to their e-commerce site or click through to this rave from The Haute List.

Week In Review: Starbucks Disses LIC, Dunkin' and the 'Bux Battle in Harlem, Rogan Joins the Party on the Bowery and More

Before you start your weekend, check out a quick rundown of the top Racked stories of the past five days.

1) Long Island City: The neighborhood that could became the neighborhood that couldn't when Starbucks decided against an LIC outpost.

2) Harlem: Meanwhile, over in Harlem coffee chains are duking it out for retail space.

3) Bowery: The news broke that designer Rogan is planning a Bowery boutique.

First Look: Aloha Rag's Hudson Square Home

It will be very interesting to see how Hawaii-based boutique Aloha Rag makes it in the big city. Led by shop president and buyer Tatsugo Yoda, Aloha is supposedly opening its first outpost in the continental United States by the end of the month at 505 Greenwich Street between Spring Street and the Holland Tunnel on ramp, yet from the scene inside the storefront last night (gallery above), that reveal might have to be pushed back a bit. Maybe they'll be able to finish the decor, bring in the fixtures and cart in clothing within the next two weeks, maybe they won't. And delays aren't what we're worried about. The real issue here is location: Yoda and friends have picked a block without very much foot traffic on the windy far edges of Soho. The boutique will have to become a destination—which is very probable, as they do carry an excellent selection of clothing and accessories for men and women from brands like 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rogan, Ann Demeulmeester and Ksubi. But seriously, the location—that's a risky move.

Storecasting: Aloha Rag To Storm Hudson Square

Hawaiian boutique Aloha Rag is trading the sunny, breezy, palm-tree-strewn beaches of the islands for the smoggy Holland Tunnel nightmaresville of Hudson Square. According to Material Interest, the retailer, "a pioneer of the artful mix of European and indie designer brands," is landing on the corner of Greenwich and Spring Streets in late March (renderings of the soon-to-open shop are above). The store will be stocked with trendy pieces from labels like Ksubi, Rogan and Tim Hamilton. We wish them good luck.
