The Week in Racked: Paragon Sports' Eco Initiative, Angel Street Thrift Greets Greenpoint, Choo Sale Chokes Big Time, Barneys Warehouse Sale Dates, Revealed, Frock Dresses Up Park Slope and so many lines for the iPhone 3G.
Break out your iCal and Moleskine and save the date! The biannual shitshow we all know and love, the Barneys Warehouse Sale, will be lining 'em up in Chelsea from Thursday, August 14 thru September 1. As it always takes place in what is currently the Barneys Co-op store at 236 West 18th Street, the Co-op will be closing on August 8 to begin the transformation from industrial space neatly showcasing designer stuff to industrial space hurriedly hocking designer stuff.
We suggest clearing your credit cards ASAP, because who can tell how this recession will affect the pricing and selection. Last year saw some of the highest starting sale prices yet, while still giving a good show with big names Balenciaga, Prada, cheap cheap Michael Kors and lots of Lanvin. The men's basement is always stocked with buried treasure, and for some reason we're really feeling its potential for this sale.
Getting a sneak peek. >>A reader (and commenter) sends word of major markdowns at Barneys: "I was at Barneys yesterday (Friday), and on the men's designer floor (3rd floor) they had taken a third markdown (i.e. now 75% off). Loads of shirts from Paul Smith, Miu Miu, Martin Margiela, Marc Jacobs, Jil Sander, et al. now $130 or less. Many suits and blazers between $300 and $500. Obviously hit and miss regarding sizes, but still a lot of stuff around." [Racked Inbox]

Dean is wearing a Ralph Lauren vest, a vintage t-shirt, A.P.C. jeans, 3.1 Phillip Lim sandals and a pin he bought in Paris. His favorite store is Barneys.
A tipster writes: "It's not the newest news but on Tuesday May 20, Barneys is marking down A LOT of spring '08 for 40% off. I work at the co-op in Austin, TX and we're pre-saling right now, and many people should already have gotten mailers about the sale. I just hadn't seen anything about it on Racked, and I'm addicted to the site! Thanks!!!" [Racked Inbox]

LA residents got their first crack at the Rogan for Target collection last night at Barneys. And just like in New York, the crowds went wild. "Last night, from 6pm-8pm, celebs, press, models, designers (including collection designer Rogan Gregory) and many, many regular folks came, they shopped, they drank lots of champagne, which probably made them shop more. Whitney Port looked like she was on a shopping mission; Tracee Ellis Ross was actually at the register paying for stuff; Becki Newton was enamored by some very adorable separates; Mena Suvari came wearing the line. Tons of other famous peeps were there, too: Rachel Bilson, Joy Bryant, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, Gabrielle Union, Vanessa Marcil and others." [Racked LA]

Despite a slow start (no line outside the store this morning?), we're going to go out on a limb and declare the Rogan for Target collection launch at Barneys a success. Though no one seemed up for waiting hours and hours in front of the store in the rain, within 5 minutes of opening time shoppers swarmed the doors. Once in, everyone made a beeline to the elevators, and then to the Rogan racks on the 7th floor. A few styles were totally gone within the first ten minutes, and within 30, all of the smaller sizes had been picked off the racks. We got mixed reports on replenishment: one sales associate asserted that everything they had was out, another told us that there was stock in the back. Trust no one.

Despite the insanity less than 24 hours ago, all is very quiet at Barneys this morning, where in a few short minutes the Rogan for Target Go International collection debuts. Maybe it's the weather or the fact that things happen more slowly above 57th street—or perhaps it's that the people just don't understand how good this junk is. Whatever the case, we'll know more when the doors open. You know the routine: Developing.
Last night, at 6pm, Barneys welcomed members of the press to their Madison Avenue store for a preview of the Rogan for Target collection. It was not a refined affair. In fact, the whole thing resembled a sample sale: it was hot and sweaty, women were stripping down to their undies (At Barneys! On Madison Avenue!) and everyone was grabbing frantically at the clothes.

Some Midtown store owners weren't thrilled at the effect the Pope's visit had on their bottom line. "'Our Fifth Avenue store was open, but it was totally blocked,' said Robert Siegel, chairman and chief executive of Lacoste USA. 'The police wouldn't let people move by the store for about five hours, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., [Saturday] and wouldn't let people in that area with any shopping bags or backpacks.'" Barneys, Ralph Lauren and Saks were also affected a bit, though 'many exhilarated shoppers visited [Saks] after the Mass.' [WWD, subscription req]

There's plenty to love about Barneys Co-op: their whimsical displays, the shoe selection, the sales racks. At times, though, the store can be a little lacking in the customer service department. On that note, check out this disturbing report sent in by a Racked informant:
I would like to share a recent incident at Barney's CO-OP in Soho. I left work early on Monday night so I could get to the store before their 7 pm closing time because I had to buy a gift for a friend. I arrived at 6:50 pm with an exact item in mind to purchase and my total transaction should have taken less than 5 minutes. When I arrived at the store the door was locked and gate was half way down.Oh no they DIDN'T >>
"Rogan Gregory's capsule designs for Target may not have generated the same frenzy as the Kate Moss for Topshop collection, but the collection certainly has a fan in Barneys New York. Julie Gilhart, the store's fashion director, has worked her magic by persuading Target to launch the Rogan for Target collection at her Manhattan and Beverly Hills flagships in advance of their launch at the superstore. The collection, which marks the first time Barneys has carried Target merchandise, will arrive in New York and Los Angeles on May 8 and 15, respectively, and will be carried on the Co-op floor. The pieces will only be in stock for five days-after that, shoppers will have to wait for the mass debut." [FWD]

It's been rumored that Barneys and Whole Foods are sniffing around the Financial District, but a Racked tipster has just sent word that Apple may also be interested in the neighborhood. Could El Jobso really be checking out storefronts south of Canal? The note:
I sent you a tip awhile back that Barney's was moving to 15 Broad. I also sent you the tip Whole Foods was moving to 23 Wall. Barney's is moving into either 15 Broad or 23 Wall. Whole Foods is not. They looked at the space, but logistically not feasible. The new scoop is that Apple is moving into 15 Broad or 23 Wall. Not sure which store is going where, but Apple and Barney's are going into those 2 spots. Also, notice on page 147 in yesterday's Real Deal under Buys, that the commercial retail space at 15 Broad has been sold for $18.62 million and they are keeping the buyer's name anonymous?Apple moving into the Financial District sounds completely crazy, yet it'd also be a genius move. And we have a feeling that there might be a granule of truth here. Anyone know more?
"We hear that Barney's, the high-end Madison Avenue department store, actually has someone on staff whose job it is to be the store pooper scooper, cleaning up after all the little purse-dogs that the veryveryvery important ladies who lunch bring in...As the saying goes, the stagehands have the best view in the house, et cetera." [Gawker]

We don't list events too often around these parts, but the debut of Phillip Lim's new kid's line at Barneys was too good to pass up. First of all, although the clothes are pretty pricey—$325 for a dress, $182 for a jacket—they're just so adorable and chic. Second, who could resist a cookies-and-juice-fueled launch party? If you're interested, the event's taking place tomorrow from 3 to 6pm on the ninth floor of the Barneys flagship on Madison Avenue and 61st Street.

This week, model Veronica Webb is guest blogging at the excellent Times fashion blog The Moment. It's a fluffy affair: She regales us with light observations on everything from Gossip Girl to the Spitzer mess, and also mentions a few of her favorite shops. Webb kicks her posting off by questioning "What really killed glamour?", then heads off to her favorite stores to find out. She proclaims Jeff Staple's Reed Space (pictured) as the "be all and end all on the LES", and continues to Barney's for discussion of Louboutins with a sales associate, who pegs glamour as "the pheromone part of sex."
Veronica's week only gets juicier, with an imagined Ashley Alexandra Dupré makeover and marriage advice straight from VW's own forays in Brazilian capeoria: "it doesn't hurt to wear low riders at home as a tool to keep the marriage hot." But before you imagine Ms. Webb in booty shorts, she wants you to remember that she's a busy mom who shops at Tribeca children's boutique Bu and the Duck and encourages "get[ing] the kids into retail therapy, you'll save them some time when they get older." Today's installment of her blogging ends the week run, but will bring us one more personal playlist and hopefully more gems like Wednesday's nod to the $17 Jacques Torres Chocolate Easter Bunny.

"Maya Rudolph's impersonation of Donatella Versace on 'Saturday Night Live' is spot on—but for those who have never seen Versace in person, they can go judge for themselves today. The perma-tanned, chain-smoking designer will hang out in the windows of Barneys for several hours with pal Simon Doonan to launch her menswear line. No word on whether or not Barneys CEO Howard Socal will let Versace smoke during her live mannequin appearance, but we wouldn't be shocked." [NY Post]

Before the weekend begins, here's a quick rundown of the top ten Racked stories of the past five days.
1) In Midtown: Luxury brand Gucci opened a new flagship, then adopted the I [Heart] NY slogan for their own line of limited-edition merchandise, without clearing the usage with the city. Ooops.
2) In Jack Heights: Jackson Heights finally got a Starbucks to call its own.
3) In Park Slope: Boutique Oak ditched the clothing at their President Street outpost for a ton of shoes.

It's Barneys day here on Racked, folks. As if the excitement of this morning's warehouse sale kick-off wasn't enough, we've got a crucial update to earlier rumors of a Barneys Meatpacking District outpost. Our ear planted firmly to the ground, Racked has caught wind of rock solid intel that has the upscale department store thisclose to signing a lease for an outpost on West 13th Street between Ninth Avenue and Washington Street. Anywhere on this block is ideal for Barneys; it's removed from the mainstream madness of West 14th Street, and one tiny little block from the front doors of Andre Balazs' new Standard Hotel, projected to open sometime in 2009. Unknown at present: just which building they're eyeing (we suspect the space above) and how big the store will be. What is known: people are going to FREAK OUT.

When/Where: Thursday, February 15th through Sunday, March 2nd. Mon—Fri 10am—9pm; Sat, Sun 10am—7pm. 255 W 17th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves (212-450-8400).

With little to no fanfare whatsoever, Barneys on Madison Avenue has added clothing from Chloë Sevigny's collection for Opening Ceremony to their seventh floor co-op section. The department store's only carrying a few styles from the blond star's 40-piece line. Strangely, they've eschewed Sevigny's fun Liberty print pieces for a selection of gray, black and white items. While the clothes aren't horrible, they are horribly priced. The linen dress at far left is $465, the sleeveless white button-down shirt is $288, the gray dress next to it is $365, the black vest is $315, the silk long-sleeve blouse is $375 and the cropped black jacket is $500. We understand that this is in line with Barneys pricing, but still...kind of hard to swallow. If you can handle those numbers, the clothes arrived about a day ago, so most sizes are still available.

There's more news on the Barneys to Fidi rumor this morning, as a suspiciously-informed tipster writes:
The rumor is that Barneys was thisclose to signing at 30 Broad Street. They have instead decided to move into the space at 15 Broad Street [ed. note: aka Downtown by Philippe Starck]. They would have the space on the second floor above the resident's entrance. The elevators and escalators will be accessed from the third set of double doors just north of the 15 Broad entrance. There is 18,000 square feet for lease, at least it was for lease and now the signs are conspicuously missing.First of all, we could see how a marriage of Barneys and DbPS would be, in a word, perfection—but they wouldn't have the ground floor? Could this really be true??? The same tipster also claims that Whole Foods is interested in 23 Wall Street, the old J. P. Morgan building, which is just insane and impossible (that building would seem like a good spot for Barneys, actually). FiDi experts, please weigh in in the comments.

Note: placement of Barneys logo totally random
Is the Barneys store slated for Fidi news to you? Because it's news to us. Some background: Early this morning, real estate developer/World Trade Center leaseholder/bespectacled silver fox Larry Silverstein discussed progress at the WTC site and Robert A.M. Stern's design for a condo-hotel at 99 Church Street. As we're told by our friends over at Curbed, during the presentation, Silverstein let slip the names of a few retailers sniffing around FiDi. Among them were luxury brands Cartier, Versace, Ferragamo...and Barneys.
There's a good chance that the department store will be joining Tiffany and Hermès way south of Canal, as we hear that the retailer's got a proposal out for a space (exact address unknown at present, but they'd probably be looking on Wall Street and on Broad near Hermès). Perhaps history is repeating itself? Send tips, if you have them, to Tips@Racked.com; story developing, obviously...
