If you are reading this, get thee to Fifth Avenue! At 10am this morning, the ridiculously awesome Diane von Furstenberg Sample Sale resumes at 260 Fifth Ave between 28th and 29th Streets. Even if you've already been, today sees an enticing fresh shipment of 4,000 items and most likely a mosh pit of determined fashionistas. This Week in Lines: DVF Wraps Around the Block

This morning at 9am, the doors to the Diane von Furstenberg sample sale, hosted in the designer's showroom at 260 Fifth Avenue, opened to the public. As you can see from the photo, the place has been completely mobbed since. A Racked correspondent writes: "They said it was taking an hour [to get in]. Two lines all the way around the block...in direct sunlight. The space looked huge it looked like there was so much stuff. I'm so bummed. There were so many people." Via Madison Avenue Spy, the price list is as follows: Wrap and vintage dresses are $175, regular dresses are $150, gowns are $300, bathing suits are $80, skirts are $80 and samples are $50. If you're planning on going, it might be a good idea to bring a bottle of water and a book to stay hydrated and busy, as the crowds aren't exactly dispersing.

Sample Sale Site Gilt Groupe Adds Menswear

2008_4_gilt.jpg

Just because we're in a recession doesn't mean that all businesses are struggling. Gilt Groupe, an online sample sale website that launched in November, announced today that they were expanding into menswear. The site, which is invitation-only, holds 24-hour sales a few times per week and often sells out of merchandise within the first hour. Although they've managed to pull some impressive names—Diane von Furstenberg, Thakoon, Tibi, Sari Gueron—the sales have never particularly thrilled us because the discounted merchandise is still often priced in the hundreds. So you're not going to be finding the type of deals you'd encounter when rifling through boxes at some bargain-basement type sale.

Still, it's clear that for those with slightly deeper pockets—or people who can't skip out on work to wait in line to get into a sample sale—a site like Gilt is a godsend. And soon, men will be as ensnared by its powers as women apparently are.

Racked Recap: The Year In...Turbulent Retail Stretches

It's been a big year for New York City retail (and not just because Racked was born in March). This week, we'll relive the glorious highlights and gruesome lowlights. We've recapped the year's most ridiculous lines, saddest goodbyes, most menacing retail presences and the most notable Street Scenes. Now, we're tackling the year's most turbulent retail stretches.

Opening day at the Apple Store on 14th Street and Ninth Avenue

While stores come and go all over this town, this year there were a few neighborhoods that really evolved (or devolved, depending on your perspective). The following four ‘hoods were hotbeds of retail activity…

4) 14th Street in MePa: A ginormous new Apple Store had us christen the entire neighborhood the "iPacking District," but it wasn't the only arrival MePa weathered this year. Diane von Furstenberg's spectacular flagship opened in May, bringing chic wrap dresses to 14th and Washington. In September, word leaked that Hugo Boss would be taking space on 14th right next door to Apple (the store is still under construction). Meanwhile, we awaited new flagships for Poleci and Ports nearby. Though the 'hood welcomed many newcomers this year, it also lost delicious pastry purveyor Little Pie Company and housewares shop Bodum, which may or may not be relocating to Soho.

Above The Fray: DVF

2007_12_dvfdamage.jpgDiane von Furstenberg, a designer much-beloved for her flattering and chic dresses, is holding a sample sale through Saturday. Curious as to whether or not it's worth stopping by? We've got DVF sale reports from three different shoppers:

1) A commenter: "Definitely worth going to. Lots of styles and sizes. Only downsides: just 2 pairs of shoes (ballet flats) and the sweaters aren't great. Cute dresses though and prices look like they just got slashed. No wait in line, but then again, I went at an off hour." [Racked Comments]

2) A reader: "Went yesterday around 2pm – not too crowded, no line to get in or pay (dressing rooms were a zoo, though). They had plenty of merchandise, a lot of it very nice, but the prices weren’t stellar. It is the usual—dresses are $150, “vintage print” wrap dresses are $175, blouses and sweaters are $80, shoes are $70. Definitely a good value if you have the money, but no crazy bargains (I got a DVF dress at Lucky Shops for $50 – 5 months later that same dress was at the sample sale for $150, so I felt pretty good about myself!). They had a great range of sizes and many pieces were from the fall collection—very wearable right now. I’m going to wait until tomorrow or Saturday and hope they cut the prices a bit more…spent too much at the Tory Burch sale." [Racked Inbox]

RackedWire: Waiting With Bated Breath For Sunglass Hut WVill, Is DVF Worthy?

2007_12_sunglasshutsmall.jpgWEST VILLAGE—Our new favorite store to hate on Bleecker Street is opening any day now according to a reader, who writes: "It looks like Sunglass Hut is set to open soon on Bleeker St and West 10th and I doubt highly it's a 'concept store'." Ralph can't be pleased about this one! [RackedWire Inbox]

MIDTOWN EAST—Has anyone had time to stop by the Diane von Furstenberg sample sale? A reader writes: "Any word on whether it’s worth going to? I went to the last one and remember that the prices weren’t that great but the line to check out was over an hour wait…am debating going this time around." If you've been, feel free to send in a report. [RackedWire Inbox]
