Following up on their promise of free cheeseburgers to those who gaze up at their new mural on West 19th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues in Chelsea, Diesel brought in Pop Burger today to feed the masses.
A first batch was immediately gobbled up at 12:30pm, and reinforcements arrived over an hour later at 1:45pm to the delight of the desperate and sunburnt waiting outside of Duane Reade. The spoils: two Pop Burger cheese sliders in a cute box.

A few months ago, Diesel put out a call for artists to submit ideas for a giant mural to be painted on the side of a building at 220 West 19th Street. It's all part of the brand's Diesel Wall initiative; they've already done similar art contests in Manchester and Zürich. The winning artist in New York is Jonathan Sandridge; his design, an abstract cheeseburger. The piece has just been painted onto the wall, and to celebrate this, Diesel is giving away free cheeseburgers tomorrow at 12:30 by the mural on 19th and Seventh Ave. You know, public art projects are great and all, but free food? That's something we can really get behind.

Public art project Diesel Wall is finally being painted in Chelsea. "It's a bit kooky-looking but the winning work's a really fun, cool graphic painting by an artist named Jonathan Sandridge of an abstract cheeseburger (no kidding) that he called 'The Good Life.' Very DIESEL. If you're driving down Seventh Avenue you can see it being painted from your cab this week (it's at 220 W. 19th St.)." [Word Up!; Previously]
Judging by the pile of trash outside and the fact that "Summer 2008" is half over, the True Religion at Broadway and West 17th Street on the corner of Union Square should be welcoming the denim-worshiping masses soon. This will be the fourth Manhattan store from the premium label, edging towards their goal of four new stores this year (the others are on the UES, Wall Street and in the Time Warner Center).
Even though True Religion is psyched for their new spot, saying that Union Square "is recognized for its distinct character and premier shopping attractions making it an ideal location for [their] fourth store in Manhattan," there will be competition riding all up on their be-denimed behinds; let's not forget that $250 jeans can be had on either side of them at both G-Star Raw and Diesel. In fact, you pretty much can't escape any of these labels anymore; they are everywhere.

Enjoy it while it lasts, because like Topshop before, the plywood wall around the construction of the new Diesel flagship at 685 Fifth Avenue and 54th Street will soon be plastered with glitzier scenes of be-denimed models assuming hipper-than-thou poses. A peek behind the iron curtain revealed a continued presence of old ad windows from the store's former life as the Gucci flagship, now moved across the street. With 19,555 square feet ripe for Diesel's debut in time for Christmas, this corner will be seeing quite a bit of action through the summer.

The distracting Test Pattern theme going on in the windows of Diesel Union Square not only reminds that the white pants season has begun, but that the 80s continue to make flagrant comebacks. Diesel's spring theme is "Squeaky Clean" and fluorescent, featuring lots of super pale neon yellows and pinks perfect for South Beach, but slightly more difficult to pull off when you're trying to look inconspicuous on the LES.

Just when you thought it was safe to slip back into those GAP regular fits, designer denim brands like 7 For All Mankind and True Religion make another lunge at your wardrobe with a whole new game plan. Quite literally bargain basement, the ongoing Missoni sale in Soho is one of those rare small sales in NY where serious discount hunters can strike it big. Entering the bazaar-ish retail space at 440 Broadway, you then must locate the stairwell (it's back and to the right) and descend to a bare bones lower level where Missoni, Bill Blass, Cynthia Steffe and a few Diesel belts hang limply on so many racks like a garage sale. Missoni dresses max out around $600, and the scarves seem the best buy at $60-70 for silk cacophonies of color. The meager offerings from Cynthia Steffe are...meager. In the far corner, however, sits a treasure collection of Bill Blass skirt suits, in summer-perfect colors with sizes ranging from 2 to 14. For the dudes they've got a small bunching of Missoni briefs, dress shirts and lightweight windbreakers jackets. Sale kicked off yesterday, runs through Monday, May 12th.

The city is about to get another huge vacant retail space, as Co-Pilot Shoes at 654 Broadway at Bleecker will be shuttering later this week. You know what that means! Hit their huge closing sale, perfect for NYU students and those desiring cheap throwaway shoes to start off summer. $15 Crocs anyone? Other (mostly tacky) offerings from Rocketdog, Diesel, Uggs, Sugar, and Minnetonka are sprinkled in with stacks of $10 skimmers and $20 disco-worthy heels.

Denim giant Diesel is offering up-and-coming artists a chance to design a gigantic mural that'll grace the wall of a building at 220 West 19th Street in Chelsea. Diesel Wall, the company's international art contest, is being mounted in four cities: Zurich, Barcelona, Manchester and New York. In each location, the winner of the contest will see their large-scale, site-specific work go up in an outdoor urban area, to be seen by millions. It's a win-win for Diesel—they get tons of free publicity and free art! Not that we want you to think that that's the main reason why they're doing this. Check out this heady excerpt from their manifesto:
Diesel Wall was born out of a need to salvage what precious public space is left and to fill it with something worth saying. We will take your powers of disuasion; your ability to disrupt; incite; excite; inspire and intrigue; to make comment; to make beautiful; to make real; to make people think again.
Right. If you're game, they're accepting entries here through May 12th.
