Enjoy it while it lasts, because like Topshop before, the plywood wall around the construction of the new Diesel flagship at 685 Fifth Avenue and 54th Street will soon be plastered with glitzier scenes of be-denimed models assuming hipper-than-thou poses. A peek behind the iron curtain revealed a continued presence of old ad windows from the store's former life as the Gucci flagship, now moved across the street. With 19,555 square feet ripe for Diesel's debut in time for Christmas, this corner will be seeing quite a bit of action through the summer.

Already in full force on the other side of the world in Hong Kong, it appears the UFO-like Chanel Mobile Art Container will crash land somewhere in New York in September 2008, just in time for Fashion Week. The conceptual lovechild of Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld and architect Zaha Hadid was called a "very elaborate Chanel commercial" by the IHT, but Racked's own first-hand sources didn't mind the commercialism as much as the drone-like rigidity of the tour and the confusing, contradictory messages found in the art—one being the tragedy of making bags out of animal skin, followed by glorification of the leather 2.55 Chanel purse. Speaking of the 2.55, IHT reports further that Chanel is offering the iconic bag in a special Mobile Art edition for $3,000. But that's not the only way Chanel is cashing in...

Cintra Wilson, filing for the Times, shops the new Gucci flagship and genuinely seems to enjoy the store and its attentive sales associates. "I found candy-apple red leather pumps, with skinny black four-inch heels, and followed Adolfo to the dressing room. 'Show everything to me,' he said. I thought he was being polite. When I opened the door to swish around in the mirrors seven minutes later, he was seated outside, waiting. 'I am not supposed to say this, but you look really hot,' Adolfo said. Too good to be true. I wondered if Gucci was trafficking in 'companionship.' Adolfo delivered armfuls of dresses, and the pumps. The dress he suggested, the ersatz Von Furstenberg, was, other than massage oil, the sexiest thing I’ve seen on my body—L.A., TV-sexy in a way I never thought I could pull off. Adolfo insisted on belting it, resulting in a blushing, Cary Grant physical-comedy moment I thoroughly enjoyed." [NY Times]

Before the weekend begins, here's a quick rundown of the top ten Racked stories of the past five days.
1) In Midtown: Luxury brand Gucci opened a new flagship, then adopted the I [Heart] NY slogan for their own line of limited-edition merchandise, without clearing the usage with the city. Ooops.
2) In Jack Heights: Jackson Heights finallygot a Starbucks to call its own.
3) In Park Slope: Boutique Oak ditched the clothing at their President Street outpost for a ton of shoes.
We're not the only one's taking umbrage with the new red, white and blue Gucci [Hearts] NY merchandise, trotted out for the unveiling of the luxury brand's massive new Fifth Avenue flagship store. The government is also unhappy with the limited-edition accessories because they boast a copyrighted logo. NY Post:
...when the store finally opened its doors Friday, the company began selling a line of limited-edition products - all stamped with "Gucci [hearts] NY," an obvious takeoff on the classic "I [heart] NY" logo, which became New York's trademarked slogan 31 years ago...The only problem is that the company did not get permission to use the New York state logo—even in an altered way—with its iconic red heart and black letters. And New York zealously guards its copyright—the state has filed more than 3,000 legal challenges over infringements...Thomas Ranese, chief marketing officer for the Empire State Development agency, which controls the copyright to the slogan, told The Post that Gucci had not contacted the agency and did not have permission to use the logo.
Subtlety isn't the name of the game at the new Gucci flagship store, open today on Fifth Avenue and 56th Street, and neither is minimalism. The place packed—packed!—full of the luxury house's merchandise. Windows currently display the brand's limited-edition white, blue and red Gucci Loves NY totes; inside, we spotted about ten shoppers breaking out their wallets for the tacky purses. The first level of the store is dedicated to accessories, mainly handbags; the section towards the front door caters unabashedly to tourists (the place is, after all, directly across the street from a massive Abercrombie), with a large selection of logo-ed items. The second floor contains menswear, the third, womenswear and an array of heels. The retailer really belongs in the Trump building: All the fixtures are gold, and the carpeting boasts the brand's interlocking G's (side note: this store looks quite a bit like the old store). It's as if the place was designed by Midas' brand-whoring niece. Which is perfect, really.
