Remember back when everyone played those graffiti bandit games on Nintendo 64 and mothers everywhere raged that their children were being taught vandalism? These days graffitiing up a gritty urban space is not only corporate-sanctioned, but it's misunderstood! To launch their new limited edition fragrance, Hugo Boss is inviting slogan submissions for their Say It, Spray It contest, with a prize of having your winning words "graffitied" on a billboard (probably in Soho). Dear Hugo Boss, please explain how a legible corporate statement printed onto purchased advertising equals graffiti, and why is there no cash payout? At least whoever wins this will have an interesting Facebook posted item. Now do us a favor: Google "graffitied" and check out the first result.

MEATPACKING—Signage has finally gone up for the Moschino and Hugo Boss stores that will sit right next the Apple Store on West 14th Street. Boss is promising a summer opening, while shoppers will have to wait 'til sometime this fall for Moschino to bow. [RackedWire]
BED-STUY—According to announcements papered up around the Stuy, local dry cleaners Easay Cleaner have lost their lease and they need you to come pick up your items pronto. Bed-Stuy Banana: "I feel bad for this business, judging by the makeshift notes and the level of English, if anyone needed their small business, it was EAsay Cleaner." [Bed-Stuy Banana]
Today WWD has new details on and a rendering of the Hugo Boss boutique that'll be rubbing shoulders with Apple in the Meatpacking District. The store will feature "the 'best of the best' of key items from Boss Black men's and women's, Boss Selection for men, Boss Orange men's and women's, Hugo men's and women's and Boss Green for men. Accessories for men and women will be sold for each line. The interior walls will be lined with what the company described as a 'superstructure' of birchwood bent to form a diamond pattern. The floor is to be covered with concrete panels, as well as oak. Merchandise will be presented on simple bronzed metal fixtures and shelf units suspended from the superstructure. Two dark brown sofas will frame a coffee table at the back of the store." In the next year, Boss also plans to plant outposts on Madison Avenue and down by Wall Street. [WWD, subscription req]
The MePa Apple store isn't just sharing space with Hugo Boss. It's also going to be rubbing elbows with high-end brand Moschino. "The final piece of the retail puzzle has been filled at Taconic Investment Partners' 401 W. 14th St. in the Meatpacking District. Italian fashion designer Moschino has signed a lease for its first freestanding Manhattan boutique there, with 2,700 square feet tucked between the new, tri-level Apple store at the Ninth Avenue corner and Hugo Boss's store to the west...The store will open this spring." Opening day at the Apple Store on 14th Street and Ninth Avenue
While stores come and go all over this town, this year there were a few neighborhoods that really evolved (or devolved, depending on your perspective). The following four ‘hoods were hotbeds of retail activity
4) 14th Street in MePa: A ginormous new Apple Store had us christen the entire neighborhood the "iPacking District," but it wasn't the only arrival MePa weathered this year. Diane von Furstenberg's spectacular flagship opened in May, bringing chic wrap dresses to 14th and Washington. In September, word leaked that Hugo Boss would be taking space on 14th right next door to Apple (the store is still under construction). Meanwhile, we awaited new flagships for Poleci and Ports nearby. Though the 'hood welcomed many newcomers this year, it also lost delicious pastry purveyor Little Pie Company and housewares shop Bodum, which may or may not be relocating to Soho.
SOHO—The city's about to get a double-dose of Hugo Boss. The designer's moving into the space right next door to the MePa Apple Store and taking a bite out of Broadway. Boss has snapped up space at 555 Broadway between Prince and Spring Streets; the storefront is currently home to an Ann Taylor store (which will close in February).
