Today's Street Scenes subject is Gerrine, shot on Lafayette Street between Howard and Grand Streets in Nolita. Feel free to vote on whether you like or dislike her outfit below—your choices are 'Perfection!,' I feel strangely ambivalent about it,' or 'Who Did This To You.'
Gerrine is wearing a dress she bought on Canal Street, Michael Kors shoes and a Mexx bag. Her favorite store was Mexx (before it closed), now it's the Young Designers Market.
Simon Doonan gives the Financial Times recession style advice: "A little bit of optimistic flamboyance is what is required during a recession. Think of Auntie Mame, who inspired the musical of the same name. She still wore a big hat even when she had no money." Reading this, we can't help but be reminded of his new book "Eccentric Glamour," which is funny considering Michael Kors has previously likened Doonan himself to Auntie Mame. [FT]

It's the last day of Fashion Week! While we do a little jig, enjoy our recaps of the most recent shows.

Michael Kors' fall collection was a throwback to the well-dressed women of the 1950's. He paired pencil skirts with little cashmere sweaters, and polished the looks with skinny belts and thick tortoiseshell eyeglasses. The knockout collection incorporated a color palette unlike any we've seen so far at Fashion Week: violet and lilac were mixed with olive, camel, rich browns and grays. PETA, however, will not be pleased with everybody's favorite Project Runway personality: nearly every piece was accented with a fur collar, featured a mink stole, or was finished with a full-on fur coat.

We thought by now we'd definitely be overMarchesa's Grecian-styled gowns and huge signature organza floral adornments. But after seeing their fall collection, we're not tired of them at all—in fact, we love them more than ever. Designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig did not so much recycle their well-known looks as strengthen them. Their gorgeous flowing gowns and glamorous minis were more assertive than past collections. It's not easy making a woman look empowered while wearing a hyperfeminine dress with ten million ruffles or roses attached to it, but Marchesa achieves this delicate balance.

Rackage is a look inside recently-opened stores around town. Today, let's browse West Village shoe and handbag emporium Plaza Too.
We so wanted to hate on Plaza Too when we first stepped inside the Hudson Street boutique. Exhausted by the West Village mallification—specifically, the overabundance of high-end handbag and accessories stores one street over on Bleecker—Plaza Too's cutesy window displays (at right) with expensive handbags looked like another blow to the neighborhood.
But once you get over the fact that it's another pricey retailer for the (wealthy) West Village, you can appreciate Plaza Too for what is: a little one-stop shop for some of the best shoes and bags we've seen in a long time.

Three weeks ago, we reported findings from the midtown sample sale scene, including those from the Kooba, Ben Sherman, AKA, and Tocca sale. So we were a little surprised to see these labels selling again in the same space at 261 West 36th St. We ventured over to observe what's changed this time around. The answer: they've lowered prices and added a few new labels to the roster.
The AKA dresses we recommended in December have been knocked down from their earlier $100 sale prices to $75 instead. The brand is also offering skirts for $35, shirts for $45, and sweaters for $45. Still standing from December is a circular rack of assorted Tocca skirts, but prices have been slashed from $65 to $45.
We can't stay angry at you, Michael Kors. It turns out that the American designer's decision to open a Soho store in the space that had housed neighborhood institution Jerry's, a move we questioned, made Kors himself uncomfortable. He tells WWD:
We were looking for a space in Soho for such a long time, and when we got the phone call about this space, the first thing I said was, 'Is that near Jerry's?'" he said. "I didn't want it to be like the 'You've Got Mail' scenario, with Tom Hanks kicking out Meg Ryan from her neighborhood store.
SOHO—The Michael Kors store that dared replace Soho stalwart Jerry's is now open. Reports a tipster: "Michael Kors Prince St. Open for business- in all its unearthly glitter." [RackedWire Inbox]
UPPER WEST SIDE—Mr. Chocolate himself, Jacques Torres, is (or was) ringing people up at his new UWS shop today. A reader writes: "Jaques Torres’ new UWS chocolate emporium is up and running, with Chef Torres himself behind the cash register as of five minutes ago when I walked past. Sadly, my cellphone cam wasn’t working." [RackedWire Inbox]
Can we all agree that American sportswear designer Michael Kors, while no doubt talented, doesn't produce the most thrilling clothing? The man is opening another NYC boutique in November (earlier than previously forecast), and though we normally wouldn't waste too much breath on the development, the shop unfortunately replaces beloved Soho institution Jerry's at 101 Prince Street. When the news was announced, our friend The Shophound bemoaned the loss, and was contacted by the realtor who helped Kors secure the space, who said, "We all hate to see things we consider part of our past change or disappear. However, the realities are also that no-one wants to live above the odors and vermin that are often associated with a restaurant..." Anyway, not to blame Kors for the neighborhood's loss, but well, the whole thing is a shame. As for Jerry's, the restaurant's owners still have plans to reopen elsewhere.
