It seems only yesterday we were trespassing in the bedroom of some teenage girl, but now the scene in the backroom of the MePa's Earnest Sewn has gotten even sweeter. "A New Hive", will focus on the dwindling number of honeybees and Colony Collapse Disorder by showcasing actual bees and donating funds from purchases to charities teaching beekeeping skills as a means of alleviating poverty.
Duck through the a-frame entry of 250 honey jars, and you'll be entering yet another genius art installation/ retail store/ cause awareness hybrid to make you ponder other things than the purchase of $300 denim. Curated by Derrick R. Cruz of the accessory label Black Sheep & Prodigal Sons, the installation will buzz off on July 31, but not before selling some cotton totebags and clothing, haute candles from DL & Co., and gold honeycomb jewelry crafted by Cruz himself. Maybe you'll even spring to purchase some of the vintage entomology cases from Obscura Antiques? Probably not though, as this is a traveling exhibit on its way to Los Angeles and Berlin.
Following the longer runs of Moscot, Trovata and Repetto in the back room at MePa's Earnest Sewn is Ruffian, the duo known for their nouveau-Elizabethan ready to wear collections. As it closes up on June 9, you've only seven more days to enter into their world: an installation designed by Anne Koch to create the bedroom of a typical girl fresh from boarding school, bringing her newly learned vices back to the sweet pink environs of her former room. It's all very Gossip Girl, except that here all the clothing strewn about is a single label: the collaboration between Earnest Sewn and Ruffian.
Last evening, we dashed over to Earnest Sewn in the MePa for a bit of reconnaissance on their newly-debuted Ruffian Shop-In-A-Shop. After deftly navigating through the hoards of moneyed Europeans strolling on Washington Street, who wander about as if they've never seen a decrepit shopping quarter, we found Earnest Sewn closed 40 minutes too early. At 6:20pm not only was the door bolted, but the sales associates and straggling shoppers inside mechanically ignored our gestures of "what gives?" Disappointment set in for the four Italian men also attempting access, who wanted desperately to be outfitted like "poor American underground workers." Further up the street, Scoop was still doing business despite some kind of wine-fueled wardrobe seminar taking place, and Dernier Cri had its doors wipe open. We'll be back, Earnest Sewn, and we want to see what you've got hiding underneath your bed.

MEATPACKING—Earnest Sewn's next pop-up concept has been revealed: The denim store's collaborating with the designers of Ruffian. "From May 27 to June 9, designers Brian Wolk and Claude Morais will take over Earnest Sewn's back room project space to showcase their fall collection. For the two-part collaboration, Ruffian will use the premium denim from Earnest Sewn and fashion it into tailored garments, while Earnest Sewn mixes Ruffian's custom-designed European textiles and adds their own unique denim expertise to create the ultimate luxury jean."
