Racked Recap: The Year In...Turbulent Retail Stretches

It's been a big year for New York City retail (and not just because Racked was born in March). This week, we'll relive the glorious highlights and gruesome lowlights. We've recapped the year's most ridiculous lines, saddest goodbyes, most menacing retail presences and the most notable Street Scenes. Now, we're tackling the year's most turbulent retail stretches.

Opening day at the Apple Store on 14th Street and Ninth Avenue

While stores come and go all over this town, this year there were a few neighborhoods that really evolved (or devolved, depending on your perspective). The following four ‘hoods were hotbeds of retail activity…

4) 14th Street in MePa: A ginormous new Apple Store had us christen the entire neighborhood the "iPacking District," but it wasn't the only arrival MePa weathered this year. Diane von Furstenberg's spectacular flagship opened in May, bringing chic wrap dresses to 14th and Washington. In September, word leaked that Hugo Boss would be taking space on 14th right next door to Apple (the store is still under construction). Meanwhile, we awaited new flagships for Poleci and Ports nearby. Though the 'hood welcomed many newcomers this year, it also lost delicious pastry purveyor Little Pie Company and housewares shop Bodum, which may or may not be relocating to Soho.

Now Open: Steven by Steve Madden LES

2007_12_stevenlesopen.jpg
Boots for sale. We've got boots for sale.

On the forecast for today: freezing rain, a bit of snow and a whole load o' Steve Madden shoes. Yes, it is our duty to tell you that the Steven by Steve Madden store at Ludlow and Rivington Streets has just opened for business. From an on-the-scene correspondent: "The new Steven store on the Lower East Side looked fully stocked as of about 9:30am this morning. Two workers were scrubbing down the surfaces, while what appeared to be an actual shop clerk scurried around in the back." Nail in coffin, people, nail in coffin.

Get Excited: LES Steven by Steve Madden Store Almost Ready to Open

2007_12_sm2.jpg

Progress on the Steven by Steve Madden store on the Lower East Side is really barreling along. We just noted that there was activity in the space last night, and lo and behold, this morning the shop already boasts official signage (shown above) and shelves stocked with Madden merch. It's as if a little team of elves is at work. Hell Square visitors will have their wedges and pumps before Christmas, oh yes, they will.

Storecasting: The LES Braces For Steven

2007_12_stevenles.jpg

The Lower East Side is finally rid of the Steve Madden outlet, but that doesn't mean that the footwear company's given up on 132 Ludlow. Nope, they're now in the process of turning the space into a Steven by Steve Madden store. A Racked staffer writes: "Workers were scurrying about in the old Steve Madden outlet at 132 Ludlow and Rivington Streets last night. The windows of the space now say 'Steven' and there were a ton of boxes piled up outside. They were practically blocking the sidewalk! Scourge!" Listen up, folks—this is the new LES and we all have to get used to it. Steve Madden is here to stay.

Steve Madden LES Outlet Over and Out

2007_11_stevemaddenoutletshuttered.jpg

Steve Madden shoes lay bagged up like so much garbage on Sunday night when the footware designer's LES outlet store closed up shop for good. A tipster writes, "They weren't kidding about closing this place down. By 5pm Sunday all unsold shoes were bagged up. End of an era." Try not to cry now.

Everything Must Go At Steve Madden LES

2007_11_stevemaddenles.jpg

The Steve Madden outlet that popped up on the Ludlow and Rivington Streets is closing down. According to a sign seen at the store, everything must go, which means that the man's already inexpensive shoes are even cheaper ($5!). Are they clearing out stock so they can use the space as a genuine Madden outpost, or is the footwear designer abandoning the LES for good? We can only hope it is the latter, though it is probably the former.

Now Open: Steve Madden On Ludlow Street

2007_10_stevemaddenrivington.jpg

The Lower East Side is now home to a Steve Madden store at 132 Ludlow and Rivington. Take some time to digest that little bit of news. A Racked source, who passed by Sunday night, writes: "It seems to be an outlet. Had the overall vibe of a sample sale. Signs in windows, hastily printed, like ALL MEN'S SHOES $100/PAIR." So basically, it's worse than we feared.
