Critical Shopping
—
The Times Critical Shopper column is up a day early this week. That's good news, because this time around Cintra Wilson decides to visit recent CFDA-award-winner Tory Burch's Elizabeth Street boutique, which she pretty much slams. Wilson's conclusion is the best part of the piece: "Say what you will about polygamist wives, but at least they know they are dressing to please the patriarchy. Tory Burch clothing inhabits a privileged, prim, wifey and deodorized look that culturally symbolizes a state of voluntary submission to the males of her tribe. But, hey, there’s nothing wrong with that, if that’s who you are." [NY Times]

Above The Fray
—
News is trickling about about the Tory Burch sample sale underway on West 36th Street, and well, it isn't pretty. A tipster: "Who told Long Island ladies who lunch about the Tory Burch sample sale? I come to this every season and have never encountered a line so long! Pretty soon people at work will be noticing that I vanished....Wasn't this supposed to be an unadvertised advance opening? Boo!" Above the Fray: Vintage Mania in Chelsea!
Despite facing a daunting line this afternoon, we have nothing but good things to say about the Manhattan Vintage Clothing Show, which began today and ends tomorrow. Twenty dollars lighter (the admission fee), we're back with a report on the shopping madness that's taking place right now in Chelsea. Let us break it down for you:
The scene:
The place was buzzing with fashionistas, stylists, a smattering of designers and their flacks (we spied Tory Burch and co.) and other industry types navigating the mind-melting 85 vendor booths—local Manhattan boutiques as well as out-of-state vintage dealers. You'll see every conceivable clothing and accessories type: dresses, skirts, blouses, hats, gloves, coats, scarves, bags, jewelry, shoes, and so forth. There were one-of-a-kind oddball pieces but plenty of designer labels like Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Burberry, and Valentino. The place is organized but the shoppers are accumulating, which isn't a bad thing: while the browsing is excellent, the people-watching here is really second to none.

Spotted By Lucky: Huge Cuffs, Glitzy Hosiery, and an Unconventional Way to Wear Black Tights and Drape Your Scarves
It's hard to sort through the hundreds of looks coming down the runway this season. That's why Racked has partnered with the editors at Lucky Magazine, who are here to help pinpoint fall's best new trends; to follow, a peek at what you'll be coveting come August.
1) Statement-making accessories (at right): "Bright, bold details were the real stand-outs at Tory Burch's ultra-cool presentation at Christie's. I thought [the] giant gemstone cuffs and chunky necklaces were especially great.."
2) Glimmery tights: "They're a little glitzy, obviously, but in muted gray and paired with all-black ensembles, they looked glamorously party-perfect."
3) White dresses with black tights: As seen at Karen Walker paired with brown accessories.
4) Retroish scarf tricks: "Instead of just wrapping a scarf around my neck, I'll be keeping cozy by draping one around my head like they did at the Charlotte Ronson show. I think it looks unbelievably ladylike and romantic..."

Rackage: Plaza Too on Hudson Street
Rackage is a look inside recently-opened stores around town. Today, let's browse West Village shoe and handbag emporium Plaza Too.

We so wanted to hate on Plaza Too when we first stepped inside the Hudson Street boutique. Exhausted by the West Village mallification—specifically, the overabundance of high-end handbag and accessories stores one street over on Bleecker—Plaza Too's cutesy window displays (at right) with expensive handbags looked like another blow to the neighborhood.
But once you get over the fact that it's another pricey retailer for the (wealthy) West Village, you can appreciate Plaza Too for what is: a little one-stop shop for some of the best shoes and bags we've seen in a long time.
