Back to Urbans BK: Don't Forget the Free Tote!

2008_3_uotote.jpg

From the Racked Inbox: "Your report on the new Brooklyn Urban Outfitters missed the free tote giveaway—it's a reprise of the flyer they had floating around yesterday. I'm not sure Brooklyn has ever been so tragically stereotyped before. Nonetheless, I'm still happy to have a UO store a block from my apartment!" Let us just mention that it was a free tote with purchase, not something they were handing out to everyone upon entrance. Still, what a collectible.

Now Open: Urban Outfitters Says Hello to Brooklyn

This morning, Urban Outfitters threw open the doors to its first Brooklyn outpost at 164 Atlantic Avenue in Cobble Hill. As expected, the entire borough turned out en masse to welcome the retailer. Well, in truth, there were only like 15 shoppers there at 11am. But still, not bad for a quiet Thursday morning. The bi-level store is arranged much as the chain's other locations—accessories, shoes and housewares are scattered throughout and women's clothing dominates the street-level area while menswear is stashed away downstairs. And the chain's usual brands (Cheap Monday, Paul Smith, Kimchi & Blue, Ben Sherman, Lacoste) are all represented.

Though the place looked great, and the employees were extremely friendly and accommodating, there is an issue with the Cobble Hill store. It is not very stroller-friendly. You have to walk up two steps to enter, and we witnessed a few local moms having trouble getting their strollers in, given that there was no ramp. Perhaps this seems like a minor issue, but the majority of this morning's shoppers came with one, two or three children and strollers were everywhere. Welcome to Brownstone Brooklyn, Urbans!
