What is the single most important foodstuff the new Whole Foods store has to offer the Tribeca community? A reader, "It's not the shish bar, it's not the fact that they have black truffles just sitting out in the open or even the fact they have three Kombucha drinks for $6..." It's a pressurized can of organic waffle and pancake batter! You're looking at the future of breakfast right here.

After a quick spot check done mere moments ago, we can safely conclude that the new Whole Foods at 270 Greenwich Street is getting pounded on its first day of business. The residents and daytime workers of Tribeca are hungry, and apparently, lacking in good mid-day meal options. Lines snaked inside the store for the shawarma station while nannies, tie-wearing office drones and randoms swarmed the hot and cold food bars (try the seitan, it's delish). Sample vendors were also out in full force: in one go-round, we tried three different types of ceviche, cut fruit, pieces of organic baguette served with butter and olive oil, steak and fancy baby food. Walk around enough, and you won't even need to buy a lunch.

From a commenter on this morning's post about the Whole Foods store opening on Greenwich Street: "I've been talking about the Whole Foods opening in TriBeCa for two years and it's finally here. I was #6 in line this morning and only got there 30 minutes early. It's a beautiful store and the upstairs cafe is enormous. I already found my favorite beer, the Brooklyner-Schneider. The shucking station and the sushi bar are to die for. And the fresh bread baked right in the store. Oh I could go on! Bought two bags of groceries but I will no doubt be back later. Remember to bring your own canvas bags for a discount -- no plastic bags in this store." [Racked Comments]
Folks, there is absolutely no question about it. It's a Whole Foods. Right on time this morning at 8:00 AM, Whole Foods Tribeca opened its doors to an excited crowd of about 100 shoppers and assorted grand opening junkies. Your garden variety "Bread Breaking" (above) got the day started, and throughout the store the people embraced their new organic-ish playpen with the vim and vigor you might expect on Greenwich Street at coffee hour. "Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel played, free rolls were distributed and staffers applied finishing touches. And by 8:10 there was a line.

We're just a few minutes away from the opening of an enormous Whole Foods store in Tribeca. An on-the-scene Racked correspondent writes, "Line 30 deep. Not exactly a neighborhood that goes ape for a store opening, but seems to be going off like clockwork nonetheless." Stay tuned for the bread-breaking ceremony, and general grocery store pandemonium. [RackedWire] UPDATE: And, we're open. It's the dawn of a new era. "Definitely 100 people here, maybe more. OMFG IT'S A WHOLE FOODS." Breathe!
We've already listed a few of the ways that Tribeca Whole Foods stands apart from other Whole Foods in the city—bulk bins, a shawarma station—but we haven't mentioned the biggest difference of all: The place is quite possibly the most family-friendly of all of the chain's NYC locations. There's a kid's aisle filled with items like fruit roll-ups and juice boxes and a nook dedicated to organic baby and toddler clothing, green bath and body products and chemical-free diapers. Upstairs, you'll find an airy cafe, but no free wifi—meaning your nanny doesn't have to worry about hipsters using the area as their unofficial office space. And in addition to an express check-out area, there's a regular old suburban-style check out. You have to hand it to Whole Foods: they certainly know their clientele.

One of the major selling points of Whole Foods Tribeca that hasn't been discussed much is the bulk bins of spices, nuts, granola and the like that the store will offer. The Tribeca location will be the first in NYC to sell food in bulk, and they've got more than 100 items to choose from. There's a dizzying array of specialty salts and sugars—lavender salt looked intriguing, as did mint sugar—we also hear that in the future, they'll be offering organic dog food in bulk form.

Feast your eyes, folks, on Whole Foods Tribeca's shawarma station. Named Shish!, it will be open 11am to 10pm daily for your snacking needs. On the menu: falafel; fried eggplant and cauliflower; turkey, lamb and beef shawarma, lamb kofta and grilled lamb and chicken kebabs. There will also be a generous selection of meze, which will rotate daily—expect things like tabbouleh, hummus, fattoush and foul moudammas (broad beans).
With less than two days to go 'til the opening of the much-anticipated Whole Foods Tribeca (debuting with a bread-breaking ceremony at 8am Wednesday, July 9th), it's about time we all got a look inside of the store. Racked took a tour this morning; throughout the day, we'll be bringing you images from inside the 69,000-square-foot grocery located at 270 Greenwich Street. This first set shows the ample cheese selection, the many fridges of beer and the store's shiny sushi kiosk. Up next, we'll tackle the shawarma station, the kid's aisle, the bulk bins, and all the other wondrous features this place has to offer. Prepare yourselves.

HELL'S KITCHEN & BEYOND—With their Ninth Avenue store now a month old, American Apparel is looking to expand further north and west. Via the company's website, we've discovered that Dov and his merry batch of headband-wearing associates are planning to open stores in Harlem (250 W 125th St between Seventh and Eighth Aves) and on the UWS (2103 Broadway at 73rd St). And of course there's also the pending F.I.T. location at 347 Seventh Ave. Give in, they've won. [RackedWire]
TRIBECA—It's almost time for Tribeca Whole Foods'opening-day extravaganza. A tipster writes, "At yesterdays green fair in Battery Park Whole Foods were handing out leaflets announcing that they would be opening on Wednesday, July 9th at 8am. Opening hours will be 8am to 10pm, 7 days per week." Whee. [RackedWire Inbox]

What better way to kick off the first day back from a long holiday weekend than with a good old reader rant? Let's get right to it:
I walk past the Whole Foods on 24th and 7th everyday, and there is always a TON of deliveries and garbage on the street near the delivery entrance on 25th street. It is disgusting—everything from pallets of dry pasta to flats filled with strawberries to fish delivery chests. I'd imagine that something organic becomes non-organic after sitting on a side walk in NYC for a few hours. What's also funny is that this form of receiving is clearly the Whole Foods M.O.—I used to work in the Time Warner center, and that location's deliveries would sit on the the loading dock for hours as well.

Around this time last year, it came to light that the CEO of Whole Foods, John Mackey, was posting "rants" under a screenname on a Yahoo! discussion board about then-Whole Foods competitor Wild Oats. Of course, criticism and an investigation into his online actions ensued. Fast forward to today: Wild Oats has been bought out by Whole Foods, and that investigation's been concluded. That means that Macky's bloggin' again! The first line of his "I'm back" post reads: "I can’t tell you how good it feels to be able to write in my blog again." We hear ya. Following is a bulleted list explaining his side of things—why he posted online, why he concocted an anonymous screenname to write under (the maleficent-sounding Rahodeb), and how he wasn't trying to manipulate Wild Oats’ stock price downward so Whole Foods could acquire it more cheaply. While the whole thing reads a bit dumbed-down, we give him credit for taking some responsibility for his mistakes. Watching a CEO apologize via blog is pretty surreal.

According to an article in The Real Deal, a 13,200-square-foot Associated Supermarket will be opening in Columbus Village, the humongous development rising slowly between West 97th and 100th Streets. This is strange because grocery store superchain Whole Foods is supposed to be anchoring the development. We checked in with Whole Foods' PR, and were informed that the project is still a go, so it seems that the UWS is about to get a double-dose of grocery stores. Hope you're all hungry up there.
