DWR Tools Around in Soho
Furniture and housewares company Design Within Reach has found a new use for their Soho showroom at 142 Wooster Street. Racked LA reports that DWR will be opening a store dedicated to its 'Tools for Living' line (desk sets, travel items, cookware, etc) in the Wooster space. The revamp will take place in September.
Also changing will be the purchase protocol—instead of browsing, paying and then having items delivered, the new Tools for Living store will be cash and carry. That's not to say that the showroom is closing, though: as Apartment Therapy reported a few weeks back, the company is moving it to a larger space on Greene Street. Double the DWR, double the fun?

Racked Mailbag: Drama at Barneys Co-op
Once in a while, we pull letters from the Racked Inbox and post them for your enjoyment and/or enlightenment. Want to contribute? We're listening. Anonymity always assured.
There's plenty to love about Barneys Co-op: their whimsical displays, the shoe selection, the sales racks. At times, though, the store can be a little lacking in the customer service department. On that note, check out this disturbing report sent in by a Racked informant:
I would like to share a recent incident at Barney's CO-OP in Soho. I left work early on Monday night so I could get to the store before their 7 pm closing time because I had to buy a gift for a friend. I arrived at 6:50 pm with an exact item in mind to purchase and my total transaction should have taken less than 5 minutes. When I arrived at the store the door was locked and gate was half way down.
Oh no they DIDN'T >>

RackedWire: Strange DNA on Broadway, Costume National Relocates in Soho, J.Crew Targets Tribeca

EAST VILLAGE—What appeared to be an in-the-works G-Star Raw store at 753 Broadway will actually be, per a commenter and The Shophound, a multi-designer boutique called DNA 2050. Apparently, the store has just opened, and alongside G-Star, is stocking "other labels including more upscale, contemporary fare like Adam by Adam Lippes, Generra, John Varvatos' Converse line and Susana Monaco that one might typically find in SoHo rather than around the corner from funky 8th Street." [Racked Comments; The Shophound]
SOHO—A Racked reader writes in about some strange doings at Costume National on Wooster Street: "Walking by the other day I noticed a 'store for rent' sign in the window. They were still open and seemed to be fully functioning as of then, but do you know what's up? Are they closing, relocating?" According to piece in the Sun, the store is packing up and moving to Mercer Street, though the article doesn't mention a specific address. [RackedWire Inbox]
TRIBECA—That men's-only J.Crew store we broke news of a few weeks ago will be opening south of Canal. DNR reports that the retailer has picked the old Liquor Store storefront at 235 West Broadway and White Street to test out the concept boutique, which is slated to open this summer. "It will carry 'the best-of-the-best' of the J. Crew men’s collection, including Collector’s Items, its upscale, limited-edition items. It will also offer the company’s 'list' of the items that every man should own...the store is 'a very short-term lease,' involving 'very little investment and risk,' that will allow the company 'to fool around and play with a men’s store. It’s going to be small.'" There's no word yet as to where the women's-only shop will land, but company CEO Mickey Drexler did reveal that he's searching for more locations for men's outposts. [DNR]

New Stores
—
The Tse boutique at 120 Wooster Street in Soho has finally opened. "While still primarily seen by customers (and many retailers) as a cashmere sweater resource, Tse has been working hard over the years to break out of that category. While there are still plenty of knits, this new store makes a strong case for the label as a lifestyle brand, including TseSay as well as a full menswear collection and lots of accessories to round out the assortment of designer Tess Giberson's sportswear." Crime Blotter: Korres Smashed in Soho

There's something you don't see everyday—the windows of a posh Soho boutique, smashed in. It appears as if the vandalizing of beauty/product shop Korres, a recent addition to the retail scene south of Houston at 110 Wooster Street, occurred in the wee hours of New Year's Eve.
A tipster, who sent the photos in yesterday, writes: "Got love those wacky tourists who smashed out the window at Korres on Wooster. Nothing was appears to be stolen though..." Apparently, grabbing the essential oils and high-end natural skincare sitting in the window wasn't the motive here.

Storecasting: Early December Opening a Major "Croc"!

Crocs, the polarizing footwear company, descended upon the Upper West Side earlier this month. But what about their Soho location that's been "in progress" for months? We checked in with the contractors back in October, and they hastily dismissed any delay speculations and instead confirmed a December "holiday" opening.
Um, how's that going? The store looks like an old dusty attic inside. And the outside? Well, compare these photos, taken yesterday, to others taken over two months ago. Can you tell the difference?
