Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez make an interview appearance in this week's print edition of Grazia to talk about what's cool for autumn—and, from what they say, everything cool is uncool all over again. Here are some choice excerpts:
On dorks and studs: "We had a reaction against the cool kids," says Jack. "Yeah, nerd and dork are the real heroes. Those cool people are so boring."
"We are also tired of the shoes with the studs and the whole biker-jacket thing," says Lazaro.
"It's so common," Jack says.
"We work on Broadway near Topshop and are so over seeing all those young girls showing so much skin," Lazaro says.
"We were looking for something more innocent—like a school uniform. So it's all about the American preppie: the toggle jacket, plaid pinafore, pleat skirt. Stuff that maybe at some point you're obliged to wear."
"The cool girl has moved on to be uncool," Jack says.
On money: "What you do now as a designer, more than ever, has got to be heartfelt," Lazaro says. "We were never the kind of designers who thought, 'Oh, people need skirts, we better design some.' There is no commercial process here. The money we make is a byproduct of what we love to do."
"I often wonder," he says. "Sometimes I think the people who buy our clothes live in a parallel universe. Hell, we can't even afford our clothes."
